I have redone an farmall H and it was missing the belly pump. I found one and installed it. I am using the tractor on a v wheel rake and starting out it raises and folds the rake fine, but after about 1 to 2 hours later it barely will lift the rake. I took the hose off and it is still pumping oil but must not have enough PSI to raise it. I'm using non detergent 30 weight oil and I have not put a pressure gauge on the line. I'ld appreciate any suggestions.

Thak you for your suggestions. I believe my next step will be to take the suggestion on the hydraulic cylinder. The cylinder has a flow reducing orifice and maybe when the oil is hotter it is restricting the flow enough not to work properly. With that change it may work similar to adding the bigger cylinder as suggested.

Though not in the book, 20-40 multi wt oil will do it (maybe for a long time) don"t mix this into a system with another tractor that has hytrans, or hydraulic fluid in it. JimN

I havw a M that does the same thing. Try heavier oil for short term fix for long term fix replace the gears in the pump they get worn over time and won't maintain the pressure.

I don't know the particulars, but your pump needs some attention. Seems like there are some shims that can be relocated to provide more pressure, or maybe a by-pass relief valve is leaking?

Later pumps had shims to adjust the end clearance of the gears. These units put out about 700 - 800 PSI. Early pumps had no shims. They were not adjustable and put out about 300 - 400 PSI.

The oil is likely thinning out as it gets hot.

You MIGHT gain some benefit with SAE 40 or SAE 50, but that's a band-aid approach.

Your best short-term solution to the problem is likely a larger diameter cylinder on the rake. If you have a 2" diameter cylinder and you upgrade to a 3", you'll be able to lift about twice as much load.
