My old Hydro 70 has given up the fight and has gone to pumping oil on two cylinders. Currently has a 301 gas engine out of an 806 I was told by the local red mech.

I poured just this side of $700 in a head job last year, but I'm not so darned sure I want to stay with that gas burner. That thing is gonna break me in fuel costs. :>(

So, what engine ya want me to put in it? An American built 312D?

You've got a 686, 966, 1066, and the H would surely replace the Hydro...just let 'er go. You must need more tractors to farm with than we do in the midwest...Cmore

A 282 would be the closest thing there is to a bolt-up. Really, it wouldn't be the most expensive project in the world. If you could get a complete 282 out of a 656 Hydro with the flywheel, all you would need is the diesel starter, throttle linkage, a tee at the bottom of the fuel tank for the return fuel (or the complete diesel tank and lines), and a little modification to the wiring. Anyone who says a 282 is hard starting must not have the patience to hold the glow plug button for the required length of time, or has only been around a totally worn one with half of the glow plugs burned out. Mine will start without being plugged in anytime it's above freezing with about 60 seconds of glow plugs.

Myself i never realy cared for the 301as that one when time comes for a rebuild means that it's got to come out and be bored . Tomany people just go find a old combine engine and stuff them in and throw there old parts off the other engine and try and make it work . Well if they had a 263 and stuffed in a 301 the parts off the 263 will fit BUT nothing is wright for the 301 , the dist. timing is wrong the carb is wrong and therefor nothing is working the way it should as the carb is to small and not jetted correctly the timing is way off for the 301 so you running tomuch timing on to lean of mixture . even if it was a 291 it is still totaly wrong. We mowed raked and moved 80% ofall the bales off 20+ acres with the 706 over the past two days on one tank of gas that has totaled out to over 18 hrs. of run time on one fuel up . Now i will have to put some gas in her to finish up because of the rain that got us yesterday afternoon as i am now going to have to rake it again and still have about 40-45 bales yet to move . So as for your fuel eating problem this explains it all to me as that tractor is plum not wright.

Man I dunno Allan, time you buy a used diesel engine and fix up somebody else's throwaway and then convert that gasser to diesel with all the controls and return lines and all the rest, a new set of rings and bearings might look cheap. If you know the head is good, the 30 cent difference in fuel price here is gonna look pale in comparison. Plus that gasser is so much easier to start and run in the winter. I do have an extra 282 diesel motor setting here but they are hard starting critters. Also have a new rebuilt 291 gasser setting on the stands when one of mine decide to take the plunge. If I can help you out with something let me know, I could nose around a little for ya. Migraine

Hi Howard,

Talked to a red shop in an ajoining town this morning and he said the same as you. All the dilly-dalling around just wouldn't be worth the effort and hassle.

He said the ideal thing would be to find an old tractor that had a bad rear half and marry the two.

So, guess it is either fix this one as a gasser or locate a donor unit.

How'd the denist go?

maybe you just want to restore it for show? I think a 70 Hydro would be a neat toy. Ya, I got my crowns. The gold only costs a few more dollars and kinda takes the hurt out of it?

Allen, I will keep an eye out for a 312, but they are a little hard to scare up as people are using them. I don't know about those gassers the only one I ever had was a 686 and only used it one winter to feed with. The 312 is real easy on fuel and a good strong engine. One would be the ticket if you can find one.
