on my 44 H it has a miss on the number 2 piston. i can take the wire off at a idle and it dosent make a bit of diffrence... The wire and plug are bran new even took off a good running tractor. new cap also. took the plug out and ran it and it has hot spark every time the rotor gives it juice. but if i leave it off and rev up the engine fast it stutters v.s. if i leave it on the plug. plus under load it seams to be better. I have adjusted all the valves to .20 cold. or 17 warm. I am thinking it is an exaust valve not closing all the way due to a week valve spring. When i pulled the valve cover off i rember seeing a spring that looked shorter then the rest of them.... I thought it was just the position of the engine. but now i got to thinking i have never seen one that had one like that before. so im hoping thats it. As it puffs blue flame out the exaust every once and a while. I don't wanna scorch the valve so i better fix her. I don't work her hard no more as she is retired but i would like it to run right. the carb is adjusted correctly and the timimg is right on the money. I have even played with both just to see if i could make it go away. I bet the spring is weak and is not closing the valve all the way. any thoughts???? is the best way to change the valve spring to put some soft rope down the cylinder untill it pops the valve open so i can work on the valve? i know you can use air also but i think the rope idea should work.

When I worked in a garage we broke porcelin off spark plug and welded an air hose fitting in it.
Then put air in the cylinder and held valves in. We would do a whole set of valve seals this way.
Never lost one. Need to make sure you have a dependable compressor though

Or you could fab a new exhaust out the back and put that jet power to work.

That rope trick is good thinking.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but sounds like you already have a burnt valve. But maybe you"ll be lucky, and it"s only stuck.

How about a compression test? If you do need to change out the valve spring, position the engine so that #2 is about mid stroke coming up on compression stroke, stuff as much rope as you can down the plug hole, then roll it up to the top of compression stroke. That way, your rope will be pushing hard against the valve preventing it from dropping. Nice thing about using compressed air is that you can also use it to leak test the cylinder. Position cylinder to be tested at TDC compression stroke. Have to be exactly at TDC or air will push the piston down. Apply compressed air and listen. If valves are leaking, you'll hear air flowing through the manifolds. If rings are leaking, you'll hear air as you listen through the oil fill opening. If it's a blown head gasket between two cylinders, you'll hear the air leaking into the cylinder next door. If you've got a bad head gasket leak to the cooling system, you'll get bubbles in the radiator.
