Howdy, boys. I brush hogged 20 acres late last week and it had not been touched in two years. Hard on both man and machine. Well, somewhere and somehow, I got into some poison ivy. I react to it pretty bad. One time a few years ago, it popped up on me in places where I had not had it a couple of days before. It sort of bloomed on me "volunteer", if you know what I mean. I finally had to go to the doc and get some kind of shot to get it to go away. Anybody out there have a favorite cure that seems to work good for them? Thanks. mike

The oil that causes the rash/irritation can remain active on clothing or rags or towels for up to a year! You need to wash or burn everything that came in contact with the Poisen Ivy or you can get it again from touching these items. Once you get it washing the affected area regularly is the most important thing. Oh yea, it will go away in about a week. Dave.

My doc said even the family dog can have the oil on his fur and keep giving you more.

I get poison ivy regularly.

I found out if you go to the doc and get a shot its gone in about a week.

If you go to the drug store and buy some cream for it,it is gone in about a week.

If you leave it alone and do nothing but scratch it,it will be gone in about a week.

So no mather what you do it will be gone in a week.

I just put up with it for a week.

Gary

In Georgia we call it poison oak. Leaves of three leave them be. Try white liquid shoe polish. David.

Years ago my grandfather taught me about something he called "spring weed". It grows on the banks of creeks & near springs around here (eastern Pa.)It has a hollow stem and you pull it & squeeze the juice out of the stem onto the affected area. It works really well, too!

Earl, I thought I was the only persone who knew about that weed! We never knew what it was called back then but just that it worked exellent! I have since found out it is called "jewelweed". My Grandpa taught me about it also. It will get a small orange color flower on it later this summer. the leaves are velvety soft and the stem is hollow and juicy and almost a translucent green. We find it along creeks, seeps and other places that tend to be wet in early summer, but it does grow in drier dirt too. If I get into the ivy, first thing I do is grab a handful of the stems , crush them up and rub it on, takes care of it right then. Some of the health nuts are bottling it and charge a small fortune for it. maybe I better start growing it on the farm!

I've heard of the Jewelweed cure also. seems everyone has a different name for it. We called them "poppers" as the seed pods explode or pop when touched. They are a favorite with the kids. Google Jewelweed to find out about its affect on poison ivy. I'm not sensitive to it so I've never had to use Jewelweed other than for entertainment

Go on a bender for a few days. You'll never even know you have it. No wonder I was never sick when I was younger!

For places like arms and legs carb cleaner in the spray cans work very well. One treatment and 99% of the time its gone. Of course I wouldn't use it in some places and it can/does burn when you spray it on you. I found it one time because I had a case of poison ivy on my arm and I was working on a carb. I miss sprayed and got my arm and the next day I also didn't have the problem with it any more

They prescribed Hydrocortisone Cream 2.5% for me.

PS: My late father-in-law could lay down in it and never catch it. My wife said she got a terrible dose of poison by walking through the smoke when she very young. Her eyes even were swollen shut.

Desoximetasone cream. Available by prescription. "A little dab'll do ya!" Until then treat it like a severe sunburn. Drink lots of water and keep the affected area clean. When the blisters pop just be concerned with preventing a secondary infection (like any other burn), the fluid in the blister will not spread the rash.

Wipe the infected area down with straight chlorine bleach as many times a day as you are able. It won't necessarily "cure" it, but I found it keeps it from spreading. Knocks the itch down for a while too.

I concur, Zanfel works good. Usually one application will stop the itch completely.

Yes, it's called "CrossBow" at about 2 tablespoons per gallon...just a whif and poison ivy/oak is gone for good. Works great, even kills small cedars...sorry, once you get it, you're in misery for a week or so...Cmore
