Johnnnnn y: I'm not trying to suggest what you ought to do, but from some of the tales you have told us about the condition of some of your tractors, as well as your latest desire to go out and buy a hi-crop, wouldn't it be better to just fix what you have and get them running reliably before you start souping them up? Either way, when you start seeking horse power, you will probably find more than 5 (just as easy as finding only 5). The amount of work and effort will be about the same for 5 as for 15. mike

You could shave the head. For a quick increase, say for pulling, take the oil out of the air cleaner and add water. That way you will oxygen enrich the engine and pick up at least 5 HP.

Hitch 5 horses to the front of the tractor :)

Seriously, it's not like a diesel where you can get 5 horsepower by turning a screw. With a gas engine it's all about compression, valve duration, valve lift, bore, stroke... All stuff that can only be changed by tearing the engine down.

This won't "add" five horsepower, but a good tune-up can re-gain a few horsepower that may be missing.

Make sure the spark plugs are gapped correctly and clean. Good spark plug wires and cap and rotor. Check the timing to be sure it is set properly - it can be advanced until you hear "pinging" under load, then just back off a bit so you don't hear a ping anymore.

Upgrading to a Super H carburetor or other with a larger venturi is a pulling trick that can boost horsepower a bit... also to grind away the ribs that attach the intake to the exhaust manifold to make for a cooler intake mixture.

Try posting over on the pulling board- they have figured out all the tricks.

i was thinking like doing somthing to the head or turning up the fuel intake. but i guess the best way to do it would to overhaul the motor and put bigger pistons in and chane the cam. but i was wondering if there was a trick you could do like advsncing the time or changing the carb out to a bigger one. but i would not put a 5 horse briggs and scrap iron my lawnmower letalone my tractor! mabey a kohler!!! heck i could just buy a bigger tractor!!!

This is probably obvious but I would say add them to the front because horses pull better than they push. The harness is kinda flimsy.:^)
