Clutch pedal wobbles

I sure need help. The clutch pedal on the Super M I"m working on wobbles terribley on the shaft -- as much as four inches side to side. The IH dealer showed the diagram related to this, and he says there was nothin on the shaft originaly to keep it from wobbling. He said the shaft is just worn, but the shaft sure doesn"t look worn. My guess is there was an insert of some type on the inside of the pedal where it is on the shaft that kept it level and without wobble. Since the IH dealer says there is no fix for this, I"ll have to find out what others have done to take care of this. Should I just put washers on the shaft on the inside toward the tractor to try to take up some slack so that the pedal doesn"t wobble so much, or should I machine something to put in the pedal housing where it goes on the shaft -- or on the shaft itself to take up the wobble? Any help will be greatly appreciataed. Take care. Jeff

I have had it both ways and solved the problem different on each. Once, the shaft was obviously worn on both ends..I welded it and put it in the lathe and brought it back down to size. On the other one, the shaft did not appear to be worn so I miked it and the hole in the pedal and got a brass sleeve. I would up taking just a hair off the shaft and enlarging the hole on the pedal with the milling machine to receive the bushing. You need a friend in a machine shop.

Any cooperative machine shop can make you a new shaft and put a bushing in the pedal. Perhaps $125 or so.

I have repaired the shaft on two 4oos. I welded them where they were worn and then turned down in a lathe. The pedals have some wear in them, but I was satisfied with repaired shaft and left the pedal alone.
The wear on the shaft will be not be around the entire shaft. It will be an area about half way around on the front of the shaft on the outside edge, and half way around on the back of the shaft on the inside, or just the opposite.

On both my M and my F-20, I had the clutch pedals resleeved. Pilot Knob Restorations does it, but I found that my local automotive machine shop does too, and the price is about the same when you factor in shipping. I also drilled and tapped a hole for a grease fitting in mine when I got them back, before I reinstallled them, so I could lubricate them. Brian

Have you installed a HF rig on the M yet?
Would be a real blast to be HV mobile on a tractor ride!
