Super A is running bad

This is my fathers tractor & I brought it to my shop to mess with it.
Here's the problem-
It runs smooth, so long as you are dripping gas into the breather. Once you stop dripping gas, it shuts down just like it ran out of fuel. Drip a little gas into the breather, hit the stater & she jums to life.

My father has cleared the tank & fuel line of obstructions. It has a real good fuel supply at the carb.
He has taken the carb apart 5 times, cleaned and reassembled. He claims the float & needle are fine. But he never replaced any of the gaskets (bowl & carb-manifold).

I believe by dripping gas into the breather, the fuel supply is increased, richening the air to the point the vaccum leak is overtaken allowing it to run. That's just my opinion from what I have seen.
The manifold looks good & so does the gasket. He never removed the manifold. But he did say the symptoms it has today presented itself "overnight".

I'm thinking of rebuilding the carb & then moving onto the manifold if it doesn't fix the issue.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Roy

Check for a bad intake manifold gasket air leak between the head & intake manifold. Using a pump oiler, squirt some oil around the area suspected of leaking air. If the engine picks up or changes RPM, with application of oil, you will know where the trouble spot is. If nothing changes, you probably have carb troubles.

First off, it's an "oil bath air cleaner", NOT a "breather". The "breather" is on top of the valve cover, and "vents" the crankcse.

Have you tried the bowl drain, to see if there's an adequate supply of gas coming into the float bowl?

The problem could be a clogged jet or passage, or a bad gasket between the carb halves, or the venturi could be missing, damaged, or incorrectly installed.

I haven't struck a lick on it yet. Just brought it to my shop/house yesterday.

You are correct, oil bath air cleaner. Sorry about that.. Old habits are hard to break..

I'm betting on the gasket between the halves, stuck-float/needle..

My father took it apart 5 times to clean it and re-assembled using the original parts/gaskets. He said he can get a gallon of gas from the bowl drain plug, so fuel is getting at least that far.

First thing I'm gonna do is rebuild the carb and see what happens.

Thanks,
Roy
