My guess is if IH could get the rubber and the customer wanted it and could wait a while, he got it. After all, IH did not make the tires, companies such as Goodyear and Firestone did. If IH could get it, they probably equipped the tractors with it. A's and B's never had factory steel. They were built during the war. But in 1943, not 1942, only 105 A's and 5 B's were produced. 9579 A's in 1942, 8577 in 1944. 6305 B's in 1942, 7933 in 1944. Production was near normal in 1945. Info from Guy Fay's data book, which is as reliable as you will find.

My '43 H came on steel and has the cast iron shift knob. It also has a bakelite steering wheel instead of the usual rubber. It was delivered in September of '43 with a magneto, no starter, no lights, and equipped for distillate instead of gasoline. Dad took what he could get at the time.

Like I said was not sure. My 44 H has the cast shifter knob on it. I have read that 42s were not available on rubber. I have also heard of them being sneaked out to farms during the night by dealers during the war. Maybe that was due to rationed materials.

Hi George, I bet some dealers did do that but if they got caught, oh boy!. I found out a while back that tires and sugar and gas wern't the only things rationed. Manufacturing facilities were halted to produce war material and say finnished tractors or cars or trucks were put on "HOLD until further notice". Unsold vehicles and PARTS! at the factory and also dealers were to go to the gov first or to essential personell (one example defence factory workers and State side officials) , no sales to non essential customers. I have seen a copy of the letter that was sent out, and it sounded like they meant it. I am sure there were bunches snuck out the back under the cover of darkness though and small parts out in lunch boxes. Farmers were somewhat considered essential as they grew food! That is the only reason there are so many war time tractors out there. There are very few cars or trucks left.

Bob, I saw a guy on Classic Tractors on RFD a year or so ago, that said he remembered when the dealer delivered his dads M at 2 A.M. because of this. He said his dad was afraid to leave it out where anyone could see it and kept it in a shed for several months. IH factories had to build tanks, trucks and even rifles for the war. No telling what other things they made.

I saw you mentioned you have one of the rifles, my Dad has one also I belive it is a M1 carbine. I have been looking for that letter because it might be interesting to know the date that they cut off everything. I think it was in late summer of 42 but I will look it up to be sure. A few years ago I hauled a 1942 Oldsmobile B-42 car to The Oldsmobile museum in Lansing MI. It was an early 42 but the number plate on the front already was made in millitary style stencil block letters. I found out some of the later 42 cars that were built before the cut off had what they called "blackout trim" no chrome on them , so apparently there were a few restrictions in place before the cut off date. The copy of the letter I have is the one sent to Oldsmobile but it was sent out to everyone who had a factory. If I find the letter I will post it on here. I don't have a scanner, but will do it the old fashioned way, by hand. I thought this one was a good one, Oldsmobile had to have what they called "Tire Marshalls" who patroled the employee parking lot checking tire pressure and wear!

It's weird what is on some of these tractors - I have two W-9's that were made the same year (I think they are '46) and one has rubber shift knob and the other has the cast shift knob.

I think during the war they put on whatever was available. And of course, my '42 models on rubber are early '42 models.

Steven, I think wierd is the word. It is really hard to tell or know what could have been done that long ago. I would assume that different parts of the country and different dealers could have effected all these things as well. Who knows for sure.

And who knows how many people just spent the money to order the hubs and rims after the war and threw the steel away, hubs and all!

I think those models were available with rubber. As I understand it 42 was the only year that all were on steel. This may not be right, but I think it is. Maybe someone else will know more than me.

Two of my 42 H's came on rubber, serial numbers 101816 and 101821. My Dad's 42 H came on steel originally, serial number 122068.

All three have rubber shift knobs...
