My just purchased cub has several problems all fixable, I am having problems deciding on how to fix them, The generator is missing, should I go to a gm one wire and convert to 12 volts or buy a used generator. The starter is dead, put new brushes in but there is alot of melted metal in rotor ect, take it to be rebuilt or get another one. Lastly the radiator leaks bad! Should I take it to the radiator shop or get a new one, have a small budget for this project it will be used weekly to mow not to show but still want to do it justice, any advice would be appreciated
thanks

Leave it 6 volt, use 0 cables, pos grd, grd to the tractor not the battery box, tune it up, it will start whenever you need it.

as a cubby owner my self i think i can help. i run a 6 foot belly mower on my cub. i put a temp gauge in my cub. my radiator does not leak but its orignal to the tractor. my advice, get a new one. don't mess around with fixing your old one or getting one thats already been repaired, just opt for the new one now. i was suprised to see how hot my cub gets when mowing. it runs in the upper end of RUN almost to HOT. having your starter rebulit will be around $100, as i just had mine redone too. it also was original to the tractor. i converted mine to 12 volts useing the 3 wire gm alt and 10 ohn resistor. i used a double v-belt pully, and i had the blades on the cooling fan turned down in the lathe to have fitting room. would u could do is, get a 12 volt generator, 12 volt voltage regulator and coil, and change your light bulbs to 12 volt and 12 volt battery. my cub was ok with 6v's, but i was tired of fight it on a negitve 20 degree morning trying to get it to start to plow snow. now she starts every time. my next upgrade is the electronic igntion set on this website to elminate the points. i also added a few more light to see better when i plow at night. long story short, opt for the new parts now, they'll pay for them selfs in one season.

I would get a price on having old radiator recored and a price on a new radiator. You can get a new one here for $139.00. Call1-888-770-6084 and the p/n is 15138. Hal

My advice is free, and guaranteed to be worth every penny.

If it were me, I'd go to the GM 3-wire internally-regulated alternator...and find a rebuilt starter. And I'd replace the radiator, simply due to the fact that your tractor is a minimum of 25+ years old, maybe as much as 60 years old. But also check the casting below the radiator for cracks, usually about where the bottom of the grills sits. This is a common point where tractors that have been frozen up break.

While these things won't be exactly cheap, in the long run you'll be glad you did them. No sense in having 'half-fast' repairs come back and bite you.

Your tractor n your choice n budget, but heres my approach:

Getting a used or rebuilt generator (versus convertign to alternator) could save time and wiring modifications plus keep her ORIGINAL..... ... But then you gotta hope the Voltage Regulator or Cutout Relay is also okay cuz a rebuilt Genny PLUS a new VR/Relay may get pricey as compared to an alternator. NOTE the GM 10 SI 3 wire is readily available and cheap as compared to a One Wire although the one wire is easier to wire up.

One of the most expensive components of a starter is the armature, Id shop around for a good used unit and compare it with what a rebuild shop will charge to fix yours.....

Often an old rotten radiator may be patched but will spring a new leak later. Same as above Id shop salvage dealers and compare it to the price of a refurbished unit.

Its just hard to say sittin here and unaware of your budget and the availability of salvage dealers and rebuild shops in your area. Still if you spend a few more bucks now n do it right (rebuild versus salvage) you may save time n money n aggravation in the long run, that would be my approach.

Don
Just my 2 cents.Buy used generator. Rebuild or have the starter rebuilt or get a used one.Armature is shot or the field coils are toast.Take the radiator out and get it repaired or pressure checked.Maybe its to far gone. Not much pressure in them. Replacement ones run about $100 to 150 . I quess.
