thanks for advice on coil problem. traced it down to week battery. would turn over enough to start but was not putting out 12V. next ?. my hood on SM seems to be 1/2 short. was told S M hood is 1/2in. longer.Why? all numbers seem to match for 53 model year. once again thanks for all good info.

Try adjusting the support rod to the top of the rqeiator but not too much that the hood wears a hole in the air breather pipe.

The hood may be some longer on and SM. It was transitional to the SMTA, which was transitional to the 400. But 1/2 inch is kinda normal. Placement of the radiator, gas tank, and steering support all can be some off. If off in opposite directions the difference is 1/2". They were never lined up like the hood on a Rolls anyway. Adjustments of the components is way tougher than living with it. Measure another SM to get the length, JimN
