656 Axle Seal - Felt Needed? (pic)

You can see by the size of the puddle in the drive that the drip was pretty steady. That's about two weeks worth on the driveway. There was poly twine wrapped around the axle when I bought it; I hope that was the cause of the seal failure because there is also a grove in the axle.

#1) A felt seal is not listed in the online Case/IH parts catalog but my dealer sold me one based on his parts lookup. ($12). Also, there was no felt washer found during disassembly. Should I use one?

#2) Wish dealer would have clued me in on the o-ring. Wasted 1/2 hour in town today trying to track one down; nothing large enough. The information in the archives was right (as usual), this job has been pretty easy but without the o-ring I won't be able to finish until Monday or later. Arrgh!

#3) I'm going to try to seat the new seal at a different depth as per the archives.

#4) Any other tricks or tips to give this repair a good chance of working?

Thank you.

Before you take the seal retainer off, check the preload on the bearings by lifting on the end of the axle. You shouldn't be able to get any "shake" out of it.

Clean that axle off really, really good and oil it down so the new seal won't get cut on reassembly. Slowly turn the cap/new seal and be careful as you go back on.

Also, you're probably going to need a 6-point socket to get those 4 cap screws out. The heads get rounded off on the top two bolts over the years and makes for hard removal.

No, no felt. Both the new double-lipped seal and o-ring run me something like $54 per side at CaseIH?

Picture shows what the collected twine fibers do to an axle seal.
