If two people agree to swap engines, one is good the other is shot, what is a FAIR price?
One salvage yard quoted their price being $1200 to $1500. The second yard said $850. Neither yard has an engine.
I do not want either of us to feel that one took advantage of the other.
Thank you

Other person decided he doesn't have any money to spend now. He said he might part out his tractor.

It is not a good engine unless you have seen it operate for an hour or so. I would not spen more than 500 difference for a used engine. I would expect to put 1000 into a complete rebuild of the "shot" engine, so a used one would be one half of that. Get all promices in writing notarized, or do not do it. (Yards sell at a 75 to 100 % profit because that is why they are there) JimN
