Getting ready for the big teardown of the H rear end and tranny. Got all new bearings seals and gaskets for both the rear end and trans. Now get this for luck, An old guy who lives down the road had an H years ago and bought new rear axle bearings for it never put them in. The tractor was sold years ago and he had the new bearings in a drawer. I went ahead and bought that set from him and put them on but now I have the new set I need to either sell or return for a 20% restock fee. I can't wait to see how smooth it is when done. Those old bearings were rough rolling and had to be causing a bunch of noise. I bet the ones in the trans are no better when I get them out. Case IH wants $ 168.64 ea for the inner and $192.90ea for the outer axle bearings. Anyone need a set of new Rear axle bearings for an H?

Just rebuilt the trans on my "44 H. I was very suprised to find that all, exept the spigot bearing near the 5th gear coupler, are standard metric bearings, got the lot, and the seals (which are imperial) for N.Z.$550 including tax @ 12.5% from our local supplier in Christchurch. Thats all the bearings and seals in the trans, diff and axle. Get your vernier calliper out and do some measuring because C.N.H. are way too dear for common standard bearings at that price.

Holy crap, one could have more tied up in bearings than the tractor is worth in some cases! When stuff like that happens, I remind myself that the old tractors are a labor of love. I can say though that I have never regreted replacing worn parts; in fact most of my regrets are about fixes I didn"t make while I had the chance.

Keep us updated on your progress. I have an M that may require some transmission work and I"ll be curious to hear about your experiences.
