F-12 transmission locked up - Help

My brother in-law was driving my 1936 F-12 and went to shift gears and when he let the clutch out it was locked up and would kill the engine. I tried to pull it but one wheel would roll forward and the other backwards. The shift lever feels like it is loose and not going into any gears. Can that be fixed by removing 4 bolts that hold shift lever on or do I have to pull the entire top cover off the transmission. I'm new at these old farmalls. Thanks. Hank.

If you pull the gear shift lever by removing the four bolts you will only be able to see the shifter yokes. Looking into the opening you should see a square opening in the yokes. This square opening indicates the transmission is in neutral. If you don't see this square opening, use a small prybar to move one or the other yokes to achieve the square. Try starting the tractor with the clutch pushed in and let it out slowly. If the engine still quits, you will have to remove the top cover to see what's wrong. To get the top cover off, you will have to either support the gas tank or remove it along with the rear support bracket. The support post for the steering wheel/shaft will have to be unbolted and supported too. Also, there are four 1/2" dowel pins that will have to be removed. They are threaded on the top with no nuts on them. You won't be able to get the cover off until you remove them. Use a 1/2" nut with a couple of flat or lock washers to start removing them. When you run out of threads, back off the nut and add more washers. Any more questions, just holler. Good Luck!

I bet he pulled up on the shifter when he shifted and got it in two gears. Yep you can take out the 4 bolts that hold the lever in and with a screw driver get it back in neutral. I had that happen on my F12 before exept, the whole shifter came off the top plate. (The bolts have worn threads for some reason.)
