I'm looking to purchase this tractor. It is roughly 1950-1955. The story was told to me that the battery was bad. When I went to look at it I noticed that it was a 6v system positive ground. They had the battery hooked up a 6v negative ground. The starter would not engage. He told me that it ran 2-3 yrs ago but only ran for 10 minutes. If I purchased this I would like to convert it to 12v negative ground. How hard would this be and what would have to be changed over

don't even think about it, bud. Alternator won't fit under that hood.

I"m going over there again this weekend to look at it again and talk to the owner. He didn"t really want to sell so hopefully cash in his hand will change his mind. It sounds like if I get it it might just need some TLC. I will let you know and thanks for the replies.

Why go to all the trouble and expense to convert to 12 volt? If you buy the tractor get a 6 volt battery hook up pos grd, polarize the generator, enjoy it. If it's up to par it will start when it's way to cold to be driving it.

Why would you want to change a little Cub to 12 volts? 6 should work fine with a good battery and the cables hooked up right. You might need a new starter if yours does not work, or get yours fixed.

On these old tractors, the ground doesn't matter. It'll run either way, and it only takes one thing to make it charge either way.

If the starer goes "click, wheeeee e!" the starter needs to be serviced. Probably needs a new Bendix end.

as stated below these are easy starting tractors when you have everything right, as far as the starter not engaging is it doing anything?? it may need to be pulled apart and cleaned , it is a fairly easy job to do the hardest thing is getting the brushes back around the armeture but it is not that difficult,,, when you have it apart take some fine sandpaper or emery to the armature and clean it up shiny, then take a round wire wheel if you have one and shine up the magnets,, put it back together and I would be 99% sure it will whirl for you,,

before you do that though be sure all your connections are making good contact and are all cleaned up, that is the easiest way to loose power from the battery on any 6 volt systemm..

they really didnt mess anything up by hooking it neg ground wioth 6 volts,, they spark just wouldnt be as hot to the plugs,, [IF this has a magneto it wouldnt make a difference,, but it probably has a dist,,

running only a few minutes is more than likely fuel related,, after you get the starter to turn the engine over, check your regular things,, fuel to carb,, must be a steady stream, not a trickle,, fuel making it to the carb?,, then check your spark, from the key to coil--power? coil to points power? -- points to plugs power?? check to be sure your plug wires are on correctly and that your points are gapped correctly,, when you get stumped come back there will be plenty of help available to you,, good luck, hope this helps, these are easy machines to get running and keep running , pat

Like Vet says they cubs turn over so easy that you can hand crank one as fast or faster then the starter turns them. As far as whats wrong with it and the starter not engageing it could be as simple as a bad bendex or could be as bad as a bad ring gear. As far as just running for 10 minutes that could be a carb problem of a problem with spark you will need to trouble shoot it to know which one it is

On a Cubby i would never go thru the troubel of changing it over to 12 just fix what it needs and it will work fine for many years . But thats up to you as it's your money and time .
