Which way is richer on the main jet adjustment screw? Is clockwise, (in) leaner? Does it decrease the fuel or the air as it is turned in? Mine doesn't seem to adjust the fuel very well. I read 5 turns out from seat for a start, but 2-3 turns either direction doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

OK. I've been mowing with a 9 foot 1100, and raking with a side delivery. Not much load there. Will see what happens with the NH 275 baler tomorrow. Going to do some seeding with a JD drill in a few days, that ought to put a little stress on it. I asked several neighbors if I could come over and do some moldboard plowing to work the tractor. I would have had better luck if I asked to sleep with their daughter! . I did double disc (the 966) a neighbors 10 acres for a pheasant/deer food plot if that helps any :)

The SH Carb is 5 turns out. That is maximum power. You can turn it in 1-1.5? turns for better economy, but if it stumbles under load it is too lean. At 3 turns out it will likely stumble under load. At 4 or 5 turns, the needle is not inside the jet.

You can screw with that adjustment all day long and never notice any differance UNTIL you put the tractor under a heavy load.

On the main (power) screw, turning it C.W. (in) leans the mixture.

Try turning the main screw in all the way (don't force it once it bottoms however!). Next adjust the idle mixture for best idle. Then snap open the throttle. If the engine stumbles/runs lean gradually open the main screw 1/4 turn at a time until it picks up when you snap the throttle open.

However if the engine runs rich even with the main screw all the way in something's amiss inside the carb (float level too high, tip broken off the main screw point, etc.)

----

NOTE! The idle mixture screw works the opposite from the main screw - turning it clockwise RICHENS the mixture.
