Suggestions for an M rebuild

I just added a 1950 Farmall M to my barn and will be restoring it over the coming months. I’m considering boring the block to accept four inch pistons and putting in a Super M overbore kit with step-head or fire crater pistons.

I know that boring an H block to take a SH piston is not recommended in that you risk breaking through into the water jacket. Is the same true for the M? What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks for the advice on this and so many previous topics

I built my M motor to 4 1/8" pistons, 281 CUI. It runs great, 82 HP with a stock reground cam, rebuilt head, reground crank, etc. I have had zero problems with mine. As a matter of fact, it barely register into the green on my temp guage, which is brand new.

I would NOT bore the block. The standard overbore rebuild kit for the M will give you 4 inch pistons, and you won't run the risk of the cylinder walls getting too thin. The 4 inch overbore kit will easily add 10 horsepower. Another 10 horses can be found with proper head work, and you will still have a good, honest, hardworking and dependable M.

Rusty,

What type of head work would you recommend?

Find a SM-450 block if you want to go to that extreme. PS, H block can take a SH-350 kit any day of the week, with of plenty of block in there. M blocks, get thin at 4.25 (which is the block bore of the SM-450 block) But, it can have sleeves to help support. I have a 281 ci M block in my 50 M, Id take it to the fields with confidence. Just my 2 cents.
