I recently purchase a 1950 H. The engine has been rebuilt, but is getting no spark. She cranks over well with great compression, but is not getting power out of the distributor. The previous owner did a 12v conversion and claims it ran before he parked it 2 years ago. Seemed like a simple fix as these electrical systems are pretty basic. The parts were cheap enough, so to eliminate problems in the future, I figured I'd replace everything. I bought a new coil, points, and ingnition switch (starting seleniod and alternator look new). However, I cannot find a 12 volt resistor. I tried all the local autoparts stores without any luck. Does anyone have advice on where to find these? Are they even needed on a 12v conversion? Thanks.

Since it has been sitting for 2 years, just try cleaning the points before replacing everything. they get a wax like coating on them when sitting especially if the engine stopped when they are open. as far as the ballast resistor goes, some 12v replacement coils are marked as to use with or without resistor. loosen it up in the bracket spin it around and see what it says. If it has internal resistor and one is also hooked up external you won't get a hot spark. It will spark, but it will be weak. I have fixed several tractors around here that were done like that. I think one guy here in town did the 12v conversions and used resistors with internal resistor coils.

Mark: I can't for the life of me understand why you didn't just buy a 12 volt coil. Give all the ballast resistors to the kids so they can practice using a hammer.

Napa has a ballast resistor part # ECHICR13 and they have a 12 volt coil part # 1C14SB with a builtin resistor. Note: That I in the resistor
part number may be the number 1. Hal

tell the parts man you want a ignition resistor maybe their confused, both of our local parts stores have them, they are about 2.50 ea. they are plentiful off older cars.

Actually, would anyone happen to if the resistor is even needed with a Pertronix 3.0 ohm flamethrower coil? I really don't understand electronic all that well, but it seems like the directions with the coil indicate that you need to remove the resistor, does that sound right?

A "12 volt" coil has an internal resistor, so you don't need an external ballast resistor.

The coil you mentioned having a 3 ohm primary is indeed a full true 12 volt coil NO BALLAST REQUIRED. A 6 volt coil has more like a 1.5 ohm primary in which case an external voltage dropping (12 to 6) current limiting ballast resistor IS REQUIRED on a 12 volt tractor.

Regardless if an electronic switch or mechanical points, if youre gonna run a 6 volt coil on a 12 volt tractor, ADD A BALLAST. If its a full true 12 volt coil (around 3 ohms primary) none required.
