Do rear weights affect front end?

Thanks for the replies to my first post. Having no prior experience with this Farmall 400, the wide front end seems light. The rears are filled and also weighted. Does this weight in the rear affect the front? What is the maximum grade I should not attempt to drive up? I'd prefer to not learn the hard way.

Thanks for all the valuable guidance. I'll be sure to have the ta lever forward and clutch engaged when going up/down hills. This does have power steering, so I'm glad to hear that's what accounts for the feeling that the front end is light. Mostly, I appreciate the genuine helpful feeling on this forum. You have all been around this equipment for years and, in many cases, generations. I'm grateful for the help.

These guys all have good points, but I can tell you from experiance going up hill with a load can flip you over quick! If the rear wheels are weighted and are getting good traction and you are pulling a load say like a log or a grader blade and it catches something in the ground the front end will raise up on you fast. If the hill is steep enough you don't have to have a load to raise the front. Just yesterday my M gave me a wake up call. I had a mower on the back and going up a steep hill with the mower raised I hit a 3" dia stick with the front tires and up she went! The mower stopped it from going over(this time) but that M can bend those hitch parts on the mower and let it go over the rest of the way. If you are going up hills very often remember this...a little slippage on the rear wheels is your friend!

o/t a little bit, just so you know, the ta will freewheel when it is engaged, meaning that if you have the ta back when going down a hill, the engine will not act as a brake to stop you, you will essentially be in neutral.

Weight on the wheels won't effect front end. The weight is on the wheels, not the tractor. Doug

Be careful on hills and always keep it in gear or this will happen:

It may be the power steering that makes the front seem light.

Do not drive up any hill you feel uncomfortable on. They will go up a lot steeper hill than I feel good on, but when it gets steep you have to leave the clutch engaged and stay off the brakes. Just like loading and unloading from a trailer.

It won't hurt anything because you have the heavy engine up front, but if you want, you can buy front wheel weights also.

Andy.
