Why did my pertronix kit burn out? It was running great for about two weeks and then all of a sudden my tractor started to miss and finally it wouldn"t start back up. I took the distributor cap off and the label on the unit was melted.

I have Pertronix electronic ignition on my H for 2 years no problems. I do believe the coil should have a 3- ohm resistor internally.

I didn't leave the switch on. I do have a super high voltage Accel coil on it though without a resistor.

WHAT gave you the idea you could run a "hot" coil with an (original type) Pertronix? The installation instructions SPECIFICALLY caution against that!

Check that alt or gen is not over charging. Use a 12v coil with minimum 3 ohm resistance across small posts. Do not use an external resistor. Call and ask Mfg. for troubleshooting advice. Knock on wood, we"ve had very good luck with these units on all makes.

Been down that road severl times , don't like them don't use them if ya want something that realy works then ya hve to spend the BIG BUCKS and go with a MSD system and on them i still use POINTS . Call me OLD FASHIONED but i am . Ya can harp about all this new stuff till your blue in the face BUT THE OLD STUFF YA CAN MAKE IT WORK . Just tyr a Micky Mouse your pickup or car to run when one of them new fangeled parts drop kick ya in the middel of the night out in the area that get radio prograhms two weeks late .

Despite their good reputation I have no direct experience with Pertronix ignition. However it sounds like the module inside the distributor overheated. Possible causes:

- 6 volt module as installed on a 12 volt system

- Defective module (includes a 6 volt module mislabelled for 12 volts)

- If the module uses the breaker plate for heat sinking, could be it's not tightly mated to the plate and/or heat conductive grease was not used.

Incidentally using the wrong high voltage wires cannot harm the module. The worst wrong wires can do is reduce the spark output or mess up nearby radio reception.

Perhaps it was just BAD to begin with?? Other things may be that the current rating of the electronic switch was NOT compatible with the coil??? I believe some of the Pertronix Flame Thrower high energy coils require a higher current rated switch then their normal switch used for tamer or stock coils that draw less current.

Grounds and wiring and connections can contribute to problems, but if its already fried you better check with pertronix and hope your switch was matched up for whatever coil you used. If you used the old stock coil the off the shelf elec switch should have handled that fine.

I guess your switch matched your tractor voltage and ground?? If you were using a 6 volt coil on a 12 volt tractor and didnt use a current limiting voltage dropping (12 to 6) ballast resistor the switch would see way too much current and may overheat.

Did you use automotive type plug wires? You are not supposed to use copper core plug wires in the ignition kits.

I used the belkin automotives. They were not copper ones.

How long was the tractor running and working before this happened? Is it hooked up properly? I don't know what else could have caused that. On the regular ignition with the points, you can add a resistor to have 12 volts without adding an ignition kit. You can get a resistor inexpensive.

There is nothing wrong with posting in the other forums. some people on the other forums might know more about the question.
