I have a 49 Farmall cub. The tractor ran fine until the fan belt broke. I did not realize it broke until I saw a little steam from the engine. I immediatly shut it down. I suspect it only ran about 5-10 min. with no belt. I replaced the belt but now it will not start. It has a full tune up and i checked the point gap and timing many times. When trying to start it smokes white a little. I had it started one time and it ran badly for a few min. and shut back down. when replacing the belt i had to remove a linkage that i belive went to the governor. I read somewhere that someone removed that linkage on thier tractor and it did the same until they put the governor back in time. Could that have put the governor out of time? or do i have another problem?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

I think you may have cracked the cylinder head too. Hal

Curious to know why you suspect it only ran for 5 to 10 minutes?

It was dark out and a friend of mine wanted to take it for a lap around the yard. as we started out i heard a snap but it sounded like we ran over a branch, we only did a lap around the yard when we came close to the house and i seen a small amount of steam from the engine. I suspect that sound was the belt snapping. All together the tractor wasnt ran that long.

What exactly does "steam from the engine" mean?

From the radiator cap
From the exhaust pipe
From the cylinder head gasket
Elsewhere?

Hard to believe you could crack a head in 5 - 10 min but the white smoke and coincidence following loss of cooling are pretty peculiar.

Have you checked compression or water level in the radiator? You could remove all the spk plugs, crank it, and look for water. What a bummer if so.

Well I saw steam comming from under the hood. It was dark and i couldnt see exactly wear from. We just came close to light and i saw steam from the front. I will take out the plugs and check that. Then probably just pull the head. No major need for the cub at this time. Thanks.

If your fan belt was off for a long time while you were using the tractor, the tractor may have overheated and cracked the head letting water get into the cylinders. Does any water come from the exhaust? If your cylinder head is cracked, you should find another one. Try removing the plugs and cranking the engine to see if any water comes out.

I was also worried that may be the case, It gets a little wet but i never expected it to be water. I assumed it was fuel. I rebuilt the carb and cleaned it many times. Should i pull the head and inspect? Do you have any tips i can follow? Thank you for your reply and help!

I would take off the cylinder head and take it to a machine shop and have it checked out for cracks. Also look in the cylinders and see if there is any coolant in them. Be sure when you put the head back on that the gasket surfaces are clean and you have a new gasket.

Good Luck.
