What to do when the farmer makes a Dumba** mistake

Well, the short version is the key to my 560G went MIA. It already had a replacement ignition installed in it, as I can see the original ignition with a broken off key inside of it.

Do I need to replace the whole switch, or can I just buy a new key, and where would I buy that key?

Thanks,

Matt

If it's an IH switch, you'll have no problem. Every U.S. built IH tractor from the 240 up to the 88 series used that key. Got a buddy with red tractors? Ask if he's got a spare key. Got a JD dealer nearby? Go in and tell them you need a key for a LX188 lawn mower. It's the same exact key, just has "John Deere" stamped into it. They used that key on just about every mower they built until recently. Either your red or green dealer's service department might even just give you one, as they tend to accumulate.

We broke the key off of our 766 when it was almost new. As it turned out, the switch had a sort of plastic middle, and the key broke off inside, leaving two little plastic ears. A penny fit it perfectly, and with the key broke off inside, you just place the penny in the slot and turned it on. Kept a penny on the dash for 21 years, and sold it with the penny still on the dash.

IH key part number is 131313C1. Oval head.

Older number was 382458R1. Round head.

If neither of those numbers are still valid, your dealer should be able to cross them to the current number.

On 460s and 560s try cutting the head end of the off so that you only have about 3/16" sticking out when key is in the switch. This will keep you from breaking it off when you hit it with your knee.

I'd just replace the switch with a inexpensive replacement one.

Those keys were all the same from the 300's/400's all the way up to at least the 56 series. And IH used the same key on Cub Cadets through at least the late '60's, and probably longer.

You can buy aftermarket switch that will work just fine. They cost around $10 or you could have a lock smith make you a key but the switch would most likely cost you a lot less

How about just replacing that keyed switch with a simple toggle switch? You'll never lose another key.

You can get the broken piece out with a bobby pin. Take the pin and cut it at the center of the "head". Use the straight side of the pin, throw the rest away. Now trim the center rounded end less and less until it will slip down along the back side of the broken piece, not the tooth side. It will "hook" around the tip of the key and you can usually pull it out.

If you can try to fish the broken part out of it with tweezers. You can get a new key made from the broken part if it is not too messed up. I am not sure about this one, but it may be possible to take the switch apart and push out the old key from the backside. Oustside of these or a locksmith there is always a new switch.

Mark those wires when you pull the switch. Hal

if its an i-h switch, all the keys are the same, you can get one from the dealer. the key for my old cub cadet 122 works in most all the farmalls from the 60's and 70's. you can try a dental pick to pull the broken key out.

You should check with your local locksmith. See if there's a manufacturer's name on the switch and model number if it has one. You may be better off to pull the switch and take it along to the locksmith. I'm sure they can make a key
that will work. Hal
