IHC W450-D Question for the pros **(URGENT)**

OK, I changed the oil it is nice and clean. I also pulled the spark plugs, cleaned them, cleaned the engine block where the plugs mate and burned out the cylinders in case there was any fuel saturation, I put it all back together, and it was still acting as though there was no fuel, which there was. How far out of whack would the timing have to be for it to not start? I have lots of spark and the compression is adequate, but no combustion. Any other possible suggestions as to what my problem could be?

Now before my eye lid slam shut here , what you are sayen is that ya can not get it started on the gas side?? If this is the case and nothing has happened to the engine as to a gear taken a dump up ft. or that ya had your pinkies into it . First make sure that when ya make the switch from diesel side to the gas side that the switch over switch in the ft intake manifold is maken the switch and ya have juice going to the dist. if it has a dist. and not a mag . now if it has a mag then ya have to make sure that that switch is not grounding out the mag. Now are you 100% sure that the switch over is alos opening up the needel valve in the carb to allow gas to enter the carb . There are some things to check if ya got it out of time and someone else doe not give ya a hand let me know AFTER I get done inspecting the inside of my eye lids and this wiil take some time.

No it will not start on the gas side, there is sufficient compression on all 4 cylinders, there is lots of spark coming out of the distributor, the needle valve is also opening up because there is fuel going through, I changed the oil because it was full of gas. Here are the things I have done to the tractor, as it ran great up until December when it got really cold outside, since then it has only started twice. I decided to do a few things that needed to be done, on the electric side, I rebuilt the starter, replaced the battery, ignition coil, spark plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs and, battery cables. On the fuel side, I cleaned the gas tank out, replaced the fuel line, installed a hi-flow glass fuel filter rebuilt the carb 3 or 4 times now and cleaned the intake manifold. When I got it however the distributor was loose so the timing could be out but I am not sure how far out it would have to be to cause a full no start as I know there is spark and I know there is fuel, which to the best of my knowledge (automotive not tractor) those are the 2 basic things you need to get an engine running, but there is always the chance that I have overlooked something and/or over fixed soemthing, but no matter what I have fixed and repaired there has never been any improvement in startability, sure the engine cranks easier now but it still does what it did since December... not start. My frustration level is just about at it's peak because I am being beaten by a 50 year old engine, it was fun at first because I was getting some of the tin cleaned up and painted while I was working on other things, but now I am pretty much done all the cleaning and scrubbing and painting that can be done, my animals are starting to get really hungry waiting for the rounds to come out to them. Anyways, that is my rant, so any suggestions are totally and completely appreciated. If only there was a good tractor mechanic around here, the only guy who did it is now retired... convenient since he rebuilt 3 tractors the same as mine.

Did you get the email I sent the other day? Are you sure the valves in the manifold are working. If the dist is loose crank the engine till the pointer on the front cover is lined up with the tdc mark on the bottom pulley. Then rotate dist till you get spark from number one wire. At least this should put the spark close enough to get a fire. When you try to stat it does it just roll over and over and never putt or backfire or anything? Are you sure you have the wires back on in the right order? We will get this running

I did get the email, I thought I had replied to it, but perhaps I didn't. If you are refering to the Intake manifold, then yes the valves are working. I will try and time the engine the way you said, is there a way to turn the engine manually? Because using the starter I don't think I can stretch across the cowl that far :) In regards to firing order, off the top of my head I believe I have it at 1-3-4-2 At times I have had putting, and sputtering and some backfiring, and some extreme backfiring 7 foot flames most of the time it just rolls though. I appreciate your help and confidence in this old tractors ability to get back to work.
