Battery Charging Help - Duh!

I have a '47 Farmall H and it has a dead battery. I haven't been able to charge it. The battery seems good, but I'm not sure how to get it charged. My charger won't register a charge. I had my friend come down with his charger, and he couldn't figure it out either. Can you suggest what I should do?

Thanks,

Jeff

What kind of a charger are you using? The modern "computer controlled" versions can't tell when they're connected to a battery unless there's at least some charge in the battery to start with. It seems really silly to me to have a charger design that can't charge a completely dead battery...isn't that why we have battery chargers in the first place?

I have an old 4 amp transformer/rectifier type charger that will put out voltage regardless of what's connected to it, and use that to bring the battery up to where a more modern higher capacity charger can tell its there.

If you leave a know charging source connected for some perioed of time (a couple hours) and it still isn't taking a charge, its time for a new battery.

Take a hydrometer and check each cell to see what the specific gravity is. Hal

Jeff, I will toss out yet another perspective: Ive had batteries that were like completely dead (but still not sulfated and totally shot) and a small wimpy few amp trickle charge would NEVER revive them. HOWEVER when I put my big honkin 50 amp charger to them they also registered NO CHARGE for maybe 20 minutes but finally came to their milk and drew a charge (low at first then increased with time) and were eventually fine.

Make sure theres electtrolyte above the plates and no cells have a gray or milky color n see what happens if a bigger charger is left on for a while.

Yep, just went through that on my H a week ago. Dummy me turned off the gas to let it run out of the carb and forgot to shut off the ignition when it died. after a week like that it was dead as a door nail. Hooked up the charger and nothing for a few min, then took it off and charged like crazy, had to turn down the juice. My charger is not a real big one but was made in the early 60s or late 50s and has never let me down.

Jeff,

How did you determine that the battery "seems good?" From the way you describe it, it "seems" pretty bad to me...

There is nothing that you can see, smell, touch, or taste that will tell you if a battery is good or not. It needs to be tested with the proper equipment.

You probably need to take the battery to a shop where they can check out the battery. If its been dead a long time you may need to replace it.
You need to check your charging system to find out why it isn't keeping the battery charged. Hal

Original 6-Volt or 12-Volt?

If original 6-Volt (+) ground, be SURE you are matching the charger lead polarity to the (+) and (-) marks at the battery POSTS.

Also, if you are using a modern "smart charger", typically, they will not turn on and charge a flat-dead battery. A quick "boost" from and appropriate good battery will bring the battery voltage up enough for the charger to kick in and finish the job.

Or, the battery may simply be "shot".
