New to this so forgive me if its a stupid question. Just started using an old Farmall 504 Gas this spring after 15 years of sitting. Tuned up and worked great for awhile- 5- 7 hours, then the sputtering problem started. So after checking this site, I think its rust in the gas tank. Pulled the tank yesterday and will clean it with rocks/ shaking method. Question: how to get rocks/ gravel behind what looks like a divider in the tank? Should I use BB's or something small? Question 2: Now that I have the tractor hoods off, I want to replace the Radiator- it was running hot and leaking. Is the radiator for the 504 similar to other models? Or model specific? Finally, would you do anything else while the tractor is in the barn, so to speak, to help make sure the sputtering problem is fixed? Thanks for the help.

A few more tips, You say you tuned it up? If you haven't already you should install a new set of points, condenser and spark plugs. One thing with the spark plugs do not go with what most parts books call for they are to hot. In a champion, run D15Y or copairable heat range in the brand of your choice. If you don't the tractor will sputter and backfire when you work it hard with todays crappy gas.

It is quite possible that a 606 IH radiator will fit although the outlets might have to be moved.

I would advise against asking a radiator shop whether your radiator needs a new core. They will automatically assume that you just placed an order for a core and will tell you that the original is no good.

Prior to going to the radiator shop, you should test it with 5-10 lbs pressure. Get some rubber expansion plugs from the plumbing dept at Home Depot. You will also need a regulator to control the pressure.

I have yet to find a radiator shop that does not attempt to oversell the customer.

If you're going to pull the radiator you should take it along to the radiator shop too. They can determine if it can be repaired or if a recore
is needed. Hal

The problem with researching the archives to find a cure for a problem is that not only will you find the correct answer, but you will also find ALL of the WRONG answers, and their is no info given as to which is the correct answer.

Personally, I have tried the rocks and pebbles method of cleaning a gas tank. The rocks got stuck behind that baffle, and they are still there. I even tried using small steel balls from ball bearings, smaller than BBs, and they also became lodged under and behind that baffle. The only real way to clean a gas tank is by using chemicals. Remove the tank from your tractor, and bring it to a competent radiator repair shop. They will do the job right the first time.

Anything that's been sitting that long should have the carburetor torn down and cleaned. There is likely to be lots of dried up gas gunk in the carburetor causing your sputtering problem too.
