Hi Thanks to every one who helped me diagnose my starting problem < the valves don't move when you turn the crank I assume its the cam gear. Is it much of a job to change it? Thanks Dave Kilgore

I drill and tap the center of the cam 7/16 then use a stud and heavy washer and nut to pull the new gear on. use what ever tools are needed to remove the cam gear, I have never removed a cam to install a Broken gear unless I needed to go deeper into the engine. Look good cuzz sometimes something else caused the gear to strip.

Dave - Aside from having to handle some heavy parts changing the cam gear is pretty straightforward.

Punch below for a few shots from when I replaced a damaged cam gear on my Super M several years ago. When I did mine no puller was required - both the front pulley and the old cam gear slid right off by hand.

Not too bad a job if you have access to a loader or something to lift the front end. I had to change the camshaft on my smta a while back. The gear loostened up and put it out of time. I blocked up the motor and used my tractor loader to pull the steering bolster, radiator assembly out. You have to losten frame bolts. It is a little harder to put back together and definitely works better with 2 people. While you have the front end off check or replace belts. Another problem is getting crankshaft pulley off. When you get it together you have to time the gears. Oh, and before you put the front cover back on don't forget that little tin oil flinger on the crank shaft.

Here's a page from my IH manual that gives a brief
instruction on how to do this. Hal

I would consider it a big job since you need to
remove a lot of parts in order to get to the camgear. Here are a few parts that need to be removed from the tractor and this won't cover all of them. My manual recommends the steering gear,
bolster, front wheels, grille and radiator be removed as an assembly. This so you can access the damper pulley and timing gear cover. These need to be removed. The camshaft needs to removed if it has failed. The old gear needs to be pressed off and a new gear pressed on. The valve tappets need to be removed so you can remove the cam. Hal
