What would cause the part where the magneto gets its power from to fail? it is not live hydrolics running off there so there should not of been added stress. i took the mag off my md and was watching the part the mag mates to and when i crank the engine the part that runs the mag doent spin. it will move slightly after 10 full cranks. what would cause this part to fail? It dosent seem like it would be under alot of stress as my kid can turn the mag by hand. the engine is not getting power tothe thing that spins the mag. so if the engine cant turn the peace that turns the mag theres somthing wrong. how should i go about fixing it? any ideas ever had it happen to you before? i knoe one of you guys or gals have seen this condition before.

Dumb question, but here goes; are you sure you have it shifted off of diesel and to gas when you are checking the mag drive? If so, refer to the other's posts. Taking the front off is no real big deal. You will be way happier with it when it is right.

johnny,

You've asked this same question quite a few times now... We are all now well-aware that the magneto drive isn't turning, and you've gotten several good suggestions as to what the problem is.

What are you looking for at this point? There is no "easy" fix for a major problem this, and no way to know exactly what's wrong until you take it apart and look at it.

I wish you good luck in figuring out your problem, but there is no need to ask "why isn't the magneto drive turning?" again. Okay?

Crankshaft gear turns a idler gear, idler gear turns cam gear the one you can see in hole where you removed mag. drive. Can you roll that gear 360 degrees manualy through mag. drive hole to inspect teeth? Its not very common for a cam gear to fail on those engines. The idler gear runs on bearings that can fail. Injection pump gear drives from idler gear. You could remove cover from front of injection pump gear and see if it turns to narrow problem down, but think the hole front cover will end up being removed in the end. Injection pump may have locked up and caused a gear to fail or lots of other things. Can't remember right now if any of bolts in mag drive mounting will hit cam gear if to long like on gas engine. Like some others said you need a manual.

You will probably need to remove the front of the tractor, radiator, damper pulley and timing gear cover so you can see if you have a stripped gear or a sheared woodruff key. Hal

As far as I know, the mag drives off the cam gear. It is not all that uncommon for the cam gear to fail by either shedding teeth or coming unbolted from the cam itself. I've seen several comments from folks here on replacing the cam gear on H,M,350,450 etc tractors.
