I bought this tractor 2 years ago. Wasn"t running well had white smoke and blew a head gasket. Pulled head took it to shop to have it checked. Sleeves looked good and appeared to have been overhauled recently. Head was junk several cracks, too numerous to count. Searched for new head found one 900 bucks. Put it back together did good then started running hot (230-240) Well I blew another gasket yesterday. I took the head to be checked, but if its cracked I dont want to put 900 bucks in another head for a 282. What motors would fit in my 706 without to much modification? I know the 310 German great motor, seem to be hard to come by. What about a 360? Anyone here of a 5.9 cummins?
Thanks for any and all help.

Depends on what you mean by "not too many modifications." Anything but another D282 will require several major parts, including front and rear engine plates for sure, possibly frame rails, possibly radiator, and lots of other little nickle-and-dime things that you either need to replace or jury-rig to get it working.

You could install a C263, C291, or C301 gasser.
A D360 will fit with the right parts, but the front plate will either need to come off a 686's D312, or you will need to have a 766/886 front plate machined down, and you'll need to drill new holes in the frame. The rear plate will also come off a 766 or 886, and will stick out around the bell housing by an inch or so.
