Hello,

Who is still using a original 6 volt starter on a tractor converted to 12 volt? My Dad has had one on his SMTA ever since I was a kid. It sure seems to turn the engine over faster than his 450 with a 12 volt starter.

I think as long as you don't crank it for more than 5-10 seconds at a crack it is pretty tough to burn an old 6 volt starter out.

I ask because I am thinking about putting a 6 volt starter on my SM with a 2-71 Detroit Diesel in it. I have to get a starter for it anyways and I'd rather have it turn faster for easier starting. Yes...I already have cables on it that are bigger than my garden hose. What do you guys think?

Mark

You don't need to dress it up for a picture. Most guys on here would rather see a picture of "in progress" things than a pretty paint job. Reminds me of my landlord who "restored" a couple of JD tractors by cleaning & painting them. Didn't even change out the 90 wt. transmission oil. Used body filler on rusted out areas. Oh well----

The original starter on my Super M has been on a "12 volt diet" for nearly 30 years now. Aside from a brush replacement and a new bendix it's doing fine.

I agree with John T - I doubt a 6 volt was ever made for the 2-71. And I also doubt a Super M 6 volt starter on 12 volts will have the stooch to spin the Detroit fast enough to start it.

If you have to get a starter anyway why not get a 12v one as it will shurley last longer seeing what engine you are starting although the old 6v ones seem to do a good job but they have been known to bust the bendix and also the casting on the front of the starter so just get a 12v one to avoid problems down the road prices are the same in fact there is a place in MINN that has new ones for 115 pluss 15 for shipping. I have got some new 6v from him and am well satisfied as there is no core charge.

Are you sure you can even get a 6 volt starter for a GM 2 - 71 Diesel??? Ive used 12 volts on 6 volt regular tractor starters n never had any problems HOWEVER it can be a bit tougher on the starter drives.

I doubt it. I'm using the original SM clutch, flywheel and starter. That's the beauty of this conversion. Sure was a lot of work cutting out the back cover/conversion plate and crankshaft adapter for the 2-71 though.

Have a 51 IH L-160 truck that has been a 6-volt starter on 12-volts for around 15 years now. Never had a problem, even with extended cranking...

I would love to see pictures of your tractor! I love the diesel conversions...

My Farmall H and My Dad's 300 and SMTA are on 6 volt starters when the tractor is on 12 volts. It sure cranks the engine over fast on my H compared to when it was on 6 volts.

I have a 6 volt starter and generator on my 12 volt 51 M and they are fine. I takes the generator a bit longer to bring battery up but thyen again who care whern you are running 6-8 hours at a time. There are those who say it could be problems but we dont believe it to be so.

It does not hurt the battery on my H because my H usually starts up very fast without any choke even in the cold and the carb is good on it.
