I just bought an international 2500 backhoe that needs some tlc. I think that the clutch is almost due a change but I wanted to inspect it first. (I haven't gotten a service manual yet) so I ask the local ih dealer/mechanic about it and he said it is a dry clutch and there is an inspection plate on the bottom remove it and I can see the clutch, that is what I did about an hour ago and got soaked with hyd. oil when the inspection plate poped loose. I put it back up and came in here to seek some counsel. Why if in deed this is a dry clutch would I get soaked? if it is a wet clutch is there any adjustment inside the case if the only adjustment is the rod going to the pedal then I think it is a clutch replacement because the clutch does not act like it fully engages when the pedal is released, in the higher gears it slips pretty bad.

also if anyone has a lead on a cylinder for the boom I am needing one of them.
thanks in advance
Ben

Thanks Gary
I went out last night and pulled the plate off altogether there was about a quart of oil come out of it that initial gush made me think it was full. it was definitly hydraulic fluid I will have to see how bad it leaks, what kind of procedure would be recommended to clean the clutch is there any way without pulling it?
Gary the cylinder that is on there is not the original, I think it is too short and it wound up breaking the lip off the cylinder that holds the snap ring.
oh and I am not sure how to tell if it is a series A or B.
thanks
Ben

The A series was basicly a utility tractor with a standard wide front end. Mine had a C-153 engine, and a shuttle shift. The B series was lower to the ground and heavier built. (hard to explain) Somebody here might know of a way to clean the clutch, but in my experience, once they get oil soaked you can never get it out and it will glaze. Since you have to fix the leak anyway, and I would guess its on the main shaft somewhere, I would say it calls for splitting the tractor a new clutch.

Is it a constructall 2500 A or B? They are two different tractors. I think i have a parts manual and some rear axle seals around here somewhere for an A. A oil soaked clutch will make it slip no matter how good the clutch is. Are you sure it isn't engine oil from a worn rear main seal? I'd say its either a bad rear main or the front tranny mainshaft seal. Either way you will have to split the tractor to fix it. You will probably have to have that cylinder rebuilt.
