Asking Again ..

I asked this question some time ago here on the IH forum and just started getting this done for my friend today. My original question was "how many drain plugs are there to drain the tranny/hydraulic fluid on a 1206 turbo tractor. One response I got said 5, three on the bottom of the tranny and then one in each axle housing. So today I drain the tranny and there are only 3 drain plugs, one for the tranny (under the big drawbar) and then two smaller ones for the axles. The axle ones are not continuous with the tranny hytrans fluid, they have regular gear lube oil in them (I left that stuff in each axle). I got almost 60 litres (15 US gallons) out of the center plug for the tranny (which I think is close to the specification but I'm not sure). I cannot find any other drain plugs there on the bottom of the transmission. Is there only the one plug or am I still missing two more?

there is a plug on the bottom of my 1466 pto that dumps another quart or so of trans fluid. i think the 1206 would have one too. leaving that old oil in would pollute the new oil.

Well I don't know who put gear grease in the finalsbut it ain't suppose to be in there it is suppose to be HY Tran . And the finals are filled thru the fill plugs on the back side not quite half way up . Now there are two more plugs up under the range transmission . One is under the hump where the trans brake is and the other is not far away . Oh btw ya did not get enough oil .

Thanks, I will have a closer look for those other plugs. The oil in the final drives might be hytrans, for sure it is not continuous with the tranny oil which is water-polluted badly. The final drive oil is not as thick as gear lube now that I think of it, more like engine oil viscosity, maybe it is hytrans oil. It is somewhat dark colored like used engine oil. I'm going to leave that in there since it is definitely not mixing with the tranny oil. The problem is that the filters continually fail due to this water or moisture problem that keeps cropping up and once that happens, steering, etc. shuts down. I just want to make sure all of the tranny oil is out before refilling. I'm not sure exactly where you are referring to about the other two plugs, can you be more specific? Forward, left, right, etc? Thanks again for your help.

The two plugs for the transmission are foward but if ya get to the bellhousing then back up . And do change the finals as water in the hyd's will be the least of your problems if the fail because of bad oil. As for water build up that comes from not using the tractor enough and not long enough , In cold weather if ya just start getting it warmed up then put it in a cold shed the transmisson and rearend act like a toilet tank on a hot day they sweat on the inside or when weather changes and the tractor just set they sweat inside and out and the condensation has to go some place and it goes to the bottm of the rear end and guess what that is where the hyd. pickup tube is and the water being on the bottom gets sucked up . Now here is something to do if the tractor sets for extended periods get under it and crack the drain plug till the water drips out and nothing but hyd. oil comes out , this will help along with more filter changes . Now if ya think that just changing the hyd. oil this one time is going to get it all out let me sell ya some beach ft. property in Az. it will take atleast two times if not three changes .
