Thanks to everyone who took the time to help me out here. Pulled the pump again this morning and with the help of El Toros diagram, double checked everything and I did have it assembled correctly. In fact, it is pretty much impossible to get anything backwards. I took Bob's suggestion and slathered a bunch of vaseline into the gears and presto, touch control works fine. A bit jerky at first but it soon smoothed out.
Again, thanks
Karl

Karl: Good to hear it was that simple, proves one should never overlook those simple and economical fixes. What would mankind have ever done without vaseline.

Great!

I wonder why that made the differance tho since you could get it to work by hand. But if it works then why question it.

Well, third or fourth day of rain here. We are getting pounded as I write this and now they are talking record rain fall. Looks like my tractor will be staying inside today.

We have clouless skies here on the South West coast of British Columbia which is supposed to hold until Sunday, hence the rush to get the first field mowed, baled and in the barn. The old 46 baler ran great last year and am hoping for more of the same. I mow with the Super A and a mid mounted mower of unknown model. It is not a balanced head but pitman arm style. Works fine.
