Hello, Folks. I have a early model 140, and also an early Cub. I was told by a local tractor man that the Cub only held 1 quart of gear oil, and the 140 held 1 gallon in the transmission. I recently purchased these tractors. When I drained the 140, over 3 gallons came out. I put one back in. The Cub looks like it should hold more than only one quart? Any help will be appreciated..... ..Tab

George, how many acres of tobacco do you grow?

I am raising 15 acres these days. Just what me and the wife can take care of and get stripped. I have raised as much as 180 acres a few years ago. It requires to much hired help, so I all but quit. I did quit for 3 years, but it is hard to get it out of my system. This may be my last year, but I say that every year. Who knows. I love to watch it grow. It is a way of life here.

Thanks, Hugh. Considering the former owner had a total of almost 4 gallons in it, I guess I will put one more quart in it, but it doesn't have a belt pulley, only the normal pto setup. My concern was under-filling it. I currently have 4 quarts in it. Can't find the oil-level plug, but it should have one somewhere. I may try to find an owner's manual for it somewhere. Thanks for the reply..... ..Tab

Tab: The 140 fill to level plug is on the left side, directly below front tip of left fender. Allmost directly behind left brake pull rod.

I always fill my tractors to the plug, install the plug and add a quart. I find with a bit extra oil in there, I get smoother shifting, gears slow down faster after tractor has been idling and you depress the clutch.

Thanks for the info. That sounds good. Would you know how many hp my 140 has? I used to operate one for a local tobacco farmer(now deceased), and always wanted one for gardening. Then I found this one with several pieces of equipment, and no rust. Even the battery box(with top) is solid. It is one of the older ones, with the horizontal bars on the grill. Got a 2-bottom plow, disc, tillis tool, and corn planter(one row). Wish I had the fertilizer attachment. Thanks again for all the info..... .Tab

Thanks. I ran the Cub with only 1 quart. I went out and added about another quart. I appreciate the good info.

I don't have the 140 listed in my book, but it should be close to a Super A. It say's 4 1/2 quarts for Super A and 1 3/4 for a Cub.

On the 140;

4 1/2 quarts without pto.
5 quarts with pto.
5 1/2 quarts with side pulley.

George, when you plant your tobacco seeds plant me some Marlboro Light seeds. LOL

I planted some in March. We sow the seeds in a bed and after reaching 8 to 12 inches tall we transplant them to the field. I will start transplantig, hopefully on Monday. Lots of folks are finished or getting close. I try never to set any until June so I can house it in September in cooler weather, I hope.
