I have the pulley gearbox off my H right now to clean/paint, just wondering how it retains it's fluid. It looks to me like any gear lube you add can eventually drain down into the transmission. Is this something that you just add fluid every time you plan to use it, or how do you maintain the fluid level? Thanks for any advice.

The transmission input gear (which runs all the time the clutch is engaged) slings oil up into a channel at the top of the transmission. The oil then runs by gravity to lube all the bearing, etc, including the belt pulley assembly. Excess oil in the belt pulley gear box overflows back to the transmission. The belt pulley assembly is the high point of the transmission, and as a result, any water that condenses in the transmission housing tends to accumulate there. Run the pulley every now and then to help purge the water out. Working the tractor a little and getting it hot will help keep water out of the transmission.

When you put it back on pour a quart in through the plug on top. Most of it'll drain down into the transmission but afterwards it gets lubed by oil's being slung up into it by the gears.
Good luck, Wm

Don't even think about it.

It is "splash fed" from the transmission/rear end oil and that fill plug just insures immediate lube after a repair.
