You need to get No1 piston near the radiator to TDC on the compression stroke. Remove No1 sparkplug and hold your thumb over the plug hole while someone hand cranks the engine until you feel compression against your thumb. I would then drop a large handle screwdriver on top of the piston. Have them keep slowly cranking the engine until the screwdriver quits rising. You need to watch the screwdriver closely. Make sure the handle is big enough so it doesn't fall into the cylinder.

When the No1 piston quits rising rotate the rotor on the mag to the No1 plug tower and install the mag on the engine.

Whenever pulling a mag or distributor always bring
No1 piston to TDC before removing them. Then don't move the engine. You just rotate the rotor
to the No1 plug tower and reinstall. Hal
PS: The same applies to your car or truck.

Dang Boy! You need to check that mag before reinstalling. With your left hand grab the #1 plug wire, then spin the mag shaft with your right hand. If you have to change shorts - the mag is working fine. If you need help turning the engine over just e-mail. bob

MAg works ok, shorts now changed, still not clear on whether to set mg @ #1 post, or to snap past #1 then set the govenor in place.

Do you need to snap the mag past the #1 tower or set it right before #1? I understand the car timing, just don"t have any experience with the magnetoes. Thanks for you reply.

I would set it before. Read the highlighted areas
from my manual. Hal

Thank you very much Mr. El Toro, you have been a very big help; unlike my friend Mr. Bob, who knows not which end is up unless it is a beer bottle, which always has the bottom end pointed up.
