Hey Paul - #1 - If you park your tractor with the front end facing downhill (or the rear wheels on substantial blocks....) you can probably change the seal without draining the transmission. #2 - However if you do elect to drain it have (2) empty 5 gallon buckets at the ready. (Don't ask how I know this...) #3 - Simply remove the two capscrews holding the PTO bearing housing to the transmission, then pry/tug! The bearing housing w/seal SHOULD slide right off. If you are careful you can re-use the existing gasket. Otherwise butter the gasket surface with RTV gasket maker when you put it back together. #4 - I kinda doubt NAPA, etc will stock the seal. But if you take the IHC part number off the existing seal any good bearing house can cross it to a National or Chicago Rawhide substitute - and they likely WILL have it in stock. #5 - The new seal will be less than 1/2 the thickness of the old one. So you can install 2 seals if you wish. However my experience is a single thin seal, positioned in the housing so the seal lip runs on an unworn section of the shaft works just fine - the 2nd seal is unnecessary. #6 - Geez - I don't know.... My opinion: Constantly wrenching keeps one's mind sharp. So I guess then it's a GOOD thing!!
