I posted this photo and two others in parts and pieces. I found the pieces of this when I drained the transmission yesterday. It looks like a thrust washer of some sort. I have spent quite some time looking through the exploded views of the trans, PTO and belt pulley, and I can't figure out what it is.

The tractor runs and shifts right, with no strange noises. The PTO works, and I don't care about the belt pulley. We also jacked it up and turned the wheels in all gears with the motor off and heard nothing strange.

I have no idea how long this was lying there, I can't remember the last time I changed the rear end oil. The last time the top cover was off was twenty years ago, and the case was clean then. I really don't want to tear into it without knowing what I am looking for.

This tractor will be number one horse for 7-8000 bales of hay starting very soon, and I am not looking forward to tearing it down before I start.

That's 200 tons of hay. What kind of hay, and how many acres. Is that from one cutting?

Not 200 tons, more like 140-60. About 40lb bales for horse people. About 80 acres half on my own and the rest rented. Mostly grass hay, june grass, orchard grass, timothy, and a little reed canary. When I seed I mix in some red clover, so there is some in the mix, depending on how recently it had lime applied. This will be about 6000 +/- bales of first cut, and the rest second cut. It depends on the weather, if the weather is good and I get the first cut off in good season, more of it will grow second cut. The fields that are cut late will have the second cut harvested directly by my neighbor's cattle, which will also fertilize next year's crop. As much as possible will go right down the road to my customers' barns. The rest I will store and sell through the winter. If some of it gets spoiled by rain, or is cut too late, some construction companies will take it for mulch.

Harold in the picture its hard to tell OD and ID measurement, could you post the size? The piece I mentioned in other post would be 1 3/8 inch OD. What made me think of that is the taper on one side of piece. Looks bigger than 1 3/8 in your pic. though. It doesn't look like the snap ring that holds race on mainshaft or race in input shaft. Tractor could have updated parts and not even use them. The big washer that holds bull gear to axle is over 3 inches OD, around 5/16 inch thick , it and lock washer have a 3/4 inch ID hole. Could this part been left from a previous repair? I don't recognize the part as any standard washer originaly inside a M transmission. I may be mistaken in what I think though. One other thing if inside axle bearing was ever updated to a roller bearing they used a washer between bearing and bull gear but it would be over 3 inches on the OD.

It looks like the washer that's on the bolt that holds the bull gear on. I'd pull the PTO and check those bull gear bolts.

Maybe its just the pictures, but it looks to me like a lock washer, I just cant think of anywhere one that size would come from, but its been a few years since Ive been inside one. Might be worth it to pull the pto and have a look-see at what you can see through there.Its better than pulling the top right now.

Only thing I can think of is maybe the end of inside race for main shaft pilot bearing broke off. I'm far from sure about that and would think if it was that piece you would be having trouble.
