D350 Utility - fluids question

Just got me a 58 350 Utility Diesel. Looking at the book it says for the tranny fluid to use one quart of IH Torque Amplifier Transmission Lubricant Additive with each 4 gallons of SAE 10W oil. Is this the only thing that will work in the tranny? I think the previous owner may have just put tranny fluid in it. Would 303 work? Also, for this oil and oil for the crank case do you use non-detergent or detergent oil?

Also, don't have a tool to unscrew the cap. Looks like maybe a 1 inch socket wrench. What's the best tool to use and where is the best place to get one. I am in Oklahoma, near Tulsa.

Put almost 7 gallons in and after starting it became unlocked. Think I have found one of the tranny leaks. Standing on the right side, just in front of where your feet go, you can look over to the left side and see a shiny cap, about the size of a jar lid that pops out. It seems to be leaking some there. I can take a pic and email to someone if they need more info. Need to know how to stop leak or what that cap is.

Ricks, I tried looking in my books and don't have a reference to that cap, although it has to be in one of those books. I was trying to find out if it required an O ring or washer. Mine is all painted over, and if yours is shiny, that either means it has been painted to look shiny (possibly hiding a crack in that cap)or someone might have put the wrong cap on it. The hydro fluid runs through there, so you don't want to be removing that cap unless you have to or the fluid is gonna run out.
Have you tried tightening it? If not, see if you can. If you have tried, then you might want to consider putting a rubber washer in there (top inside of the cap) to stop the leak. This is gonna require some fluid loss, so have a clean bucket underneath that thing before you take the cap off.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Thanks. The cap just pops out by prying with a screwdriver. Have tried just seating it flush all of the way down, but that didn't help. When the tractor is not running no more fluid spills out than when the cap is on and tractor running. Was thinking about putting something around it. I couldn't find it in my books either.

Actually it is 3/4. I bought a 1/2 to 3/4 socket adaptor and it fits perfectly. Thanks for all of the feedback. I bougt some Hyrdaulic/Tranny fluid today that is suppose to be compatible with Hy-Tran.

Ricks,
I just use a HUGE screw driver to turn mine out. George is SO right about you being in for a treat!
I have a 57 350D

If you find a place that has parts, let me know!

Use Hy-Tran or any good equvalent hydraulic/transmission oil. Use good detergent oil in the crankcase like SAE HD 30 or even 15W40. The oil plug on mine uses a adjustable wrench. Mine is a row crop maybe the utility is different.

geoge, the pipe plug has a 1" square hole in it. I just took a piece of one inch angle iron and ground it til it fit and it worked like a charm.

Jay, you are exactly right. I meant that the row crops like mine do not have that for the rear end. They just have a bolt on cover next to the gear shifter.

Thanks. At the local Atwoods (farm store like a Wal-mart) they have a Mystik brand. I think something like JT. Would that be okay.

So I can by the hydraulic/tranny fluid. I assume I would also use it in the hydraulics, so just buy a lot of one thing?

Just read the side of bucket it will have a list of all other oils it will be compatable with. Yes it also works in the hydraulic system. You are in for a treat as soon as you have to work on that engine. It is one of the most expensive and hard to find parts for it. They are really easy on fuel and have plenty of power.
