Trying to get the steering wheel off of my 460 U I inadvertantly put preesure on the plug at the bottom of the gearcase for the steering box. All fluid drained out before I could get it removed to fix the leak. Now I need to know how much of what kind of lube gets put in there. what was in there is very black but maybe motor oil consistency. My operators manual is ordered but I don't know if that would help with what I am looking for.

Thanks In Advance

Butch

Drain the whole system and put in Case-IH Hytran, or at least something that has the Hytran spec on it. Some people will tell you to use HyTran, period. I don't know if that is necessary on an older tractor such as the 460. Your old oil is shot, probably contains water and everything else imaginable. I have had that whole system apart, and just assembled in the last couple of months and don't remember any plug -- where exactly is it? I did not have the steering shaft apart though. Next time use a puller. That is a splined shaft and darn near impossible to get apart without one. System holds 10 gallons if I remember right, your Operator's manual will have that in it.

CNKS, There is a small gear case at the bottom of the steering shaft that contains(ed) oil. I was trying to remove the steering wheel by turning two bolts into the threaded holes on the steering wheel. I cleaned out the holes and proceeded to tighten on them(They should force the steering wheel shaft away from the steering wheel) If I am not mistaken it is a conical shaped splined shaft on the steering shaft which mates up to the steering wheel. WWhen I had what I thought was plenty of preesure on those two bolts I started to hit them with the hammer to try to jolt them free. I understand damage occurs with excessive force, so I didn't use any (so I thought) A couple minues later I had this BLACK stream running down the clutch housing. I had recently replaced all hydraulic oil. As I removed this entire steering system I figured out where the hyd system connects to the steering. But there still is the gearcase that needs lube. What type of puller should I use? I think a puller will just break apart the plastic steering wheel, unless my vision of a puller is not correct. I'll try to post a pic later!

I could have sworn that in my 300 U power steering gearbox the manual called for 90W or 140W gear lube.I don`t remember how much ,a quart or two

Just went out and checked my 300U owners manual. It says 1 1/2 Pints of SAE 80W gear lube. I forgot to mention the power steering gear boxes are very similar between the 300U and 460U.
