Found a good price I feel to convert to the electronic ignition for the 140. The price for the kit was $75.00 which is the cheapest I have found. But before I go and fix something that is not broke is it worth it to convert? Also what are some of the benifits? Thanks,
Keith

If you are still on 6 volts, I would really think about not doing the conversion. The place I bought mine from warned me before I bought it that they dont work as well on 6 volts. The reason is that the electronic ignition needs a min of 4.5 volts to work. Often when you are cranking over the tractor the voltage drops below that. On my tractor you have to crank the tractor till it starts turning fast, then let off the starter. As soon as you let off it will fire. This is how you have to start it the first time that is hasnt been started for a day or two. If you shut if off and start if a little while later it will fire as soon as you touch the starter. My guess to why it acts this way is that the battery is freshly charged from the generator so there is more voltage available.

I switched both 140's to electronic ignition (12 V neg grnd). Spend the extra bucks and get the hot coil so you can open your plug gap. I bought the ei and coil on this site. Both start 1st rev now and I don't have to fiddle with points and condenser anymore. This was time and money well spent. Alternator is highly recommended also.

I have converted 2 tractors and really like the ei. Both of mine were also converted to 12 volt negative ground before the ei conversion. Points and conderser work just as good as long as the points are set correctly. They just don't seem to stay that way. On both of my tractors I had trouble keeping points at right setting. If you use the tractor a lot and are replacing points and condensor on a regular basis the ei will pay for tiself. Be sure to get the right one, for the tractor voltage and ground. I don't think you will ever regret the conversion. Keep the old parts in case you want to change it back to"original" someday.

Its been converted to 12v Neg. ground already. I have not had any problems so far with the points. But I do no my father-in-law and his mind set was "get close it will work" He was not the type of person to go by any type of manual. He was well know to be a rigger. So the reason I have considered the EI is to avoid problems in the future. Also have any of you experienced better performance when you did the conversion?
Thanks for the Information thus far!
Keith
