Ok, I posted on here a couple of days ago about my Farmall giving me problems. So as a recap this is what has happened as of now.
I used the tractor about a week ago and it ran great for about two hours. At that time it was using a 12 volt battery with a 6 volt coil. The tractor started becoming very sluggish and then started back fireing. Once it died i was not able to get it started again. So i followed everyones suggestions and replaced the coil with a 12 volt coil (internal risister), new points and a new condenser. Well it started great after everything was replaced and ran for about 30 seconds, during that time it sounded great. But then it just died. So i figured it was probably a gas problem. so i cleaned the carb, bulb and fuel lines. I also checked the fuel filter and it was ok. But the tractor still will not start. I did notice however the floats in the carb were dented on the bottom, Would this cause a problem? If anyone has an idea of what i need to look at next please tell me. I"m at a loss, and so is everyone that i"ve talked to. Mostly the ones i talked to (family) say that they have no idea because of how old the tractor is. Thank you for any help you can give me. And thanks again for the response i got from my earlier post. I can tell with the tractor starting that i"m working in the right area, i just don"t know where to go from here.

Since it started and sounded great after replacing the ignition stuff, my money says the problem is with the points, advance, not the distributor gears.

One of my 140's had a point set screw that would eventually slip after tightening. The screws are el cheapo any way. It would start great but eventually would start slipping, go out of time, start backfiring, and quit. Then it would not start until the gap was reset. I put in a hex head screw to tighten better which helped some.

Recheck the point gap and be sure this is not the problem. Make sure the set screw is holding tight. Also make sure the spark advance is set about 14 deg. I would do this prior to removing the distributor.

I spent the bucks for electronic ignition which solved all those timing / gap / dirty points / problems.

Nawlens : Pray tell what is timing gears slipped a few teeth but timing advance being off. I've owned about 9, 4 cylinder gas Farmalls over the past 40 years, never seen the setting of a set of points move by slipping in my lifetime. I have seen the rotation of the distributor slip.

The points in my Super A, can't remember when I last had the cap off, and it mows with a woods mower probably 3-4 hours per week. The points in my 140 have been there untouched for 4 years I did put new points in my 130 when I had the distributor out last winter.

I scratch my head in amazment every time I hear one of you folks going on about time saved with electronic ign. I've had enough experience with cars and trucks quitting on the road to frown on electronic ign. Never had one of my old distributor ign leave me on the road. I had the electronic ign fail on a new Oldsmobile with less than 1,000 miles on it, and had it to be towed in. I was not amused as my wife had the car, coming to pick me up 40 miles away.

I'm with Hugh... backfiring only occurs with a timing problem. Fuel problem will either blow black smoke or begin missing, or just quit.

Run the engine to TDC on #1 and pull the distributor out and take it apart. They aren't real hard to get back together. I've seen a couple of them stripped on tractors I've taken apart - probably the reason they were parked because the owner just couldn't get them to run right!

Aaron, I recalled Hugh having the problem he related and went back in the archives. I did a "keyword search" typing in "Hugh distributor" and found many posts/replies and picked two from last winter. I have attached his posting of 12/09/06 and his dealing with stripped dist. in cold Canadian temperatures...but the mice are comfy. Hope this helps.

The only thing I could think of is the dents on the float could be letting it hang up on the sides of the carb cutting off fuel supply. Not to say the dents are the problem, but it could be bent somehow.Since you replaced the electrical and it still dies, then it sounds to me like a fuel delivery problem. What happens when you open the carb drain? BTW, not to step on anyones feet, but if you are running out of gas, they can occasionally "backfire", especially if its been working hard.

Aaron, When I read your first thread, the first thought that crossed my mind was a vapor lock. I am not too smart about tractors, but if it were a car, I would be looking first, at the gas cap which (in a car) should have an air vent which sometimes gets clogged.
There can be many reasons for vapor lock, but that is where I would have started, the cap, and work my way forward to the fuel tank, then carburetor.
I may be way off base and probably am, but that was my thought.

Aaron: Backfire only occurs when fire is not in time with compression.

Aaron: In this thread you did not address the possible cause and problem I suggested in the earlier thread. I've had 3 distributor drives strip in my lifetime, and none of the 3 acted exactly the same. They did however act very similar to what you describe. If those gears strip then there is always some of the teeth still good. Sometimes one can even time them again and they will work temporarily, ocasionally they will slip two complete revolutions and align for perfect timing once again, and the tractor will start. The advice I gave in the earlier thread might need a bit more investigation. If you removed the cap and couldn't turn the rotor, it is possible the drive was engaged on good teeth at that point.

This is quite easy to check further, first bring engine to TDC on compression. Then just remove the cap, make note of rotor position, it should be at No.1 plug wire. Remove the distributor and have a look at the driven gear on end of distributor. If some of those teeth look worn, then remove distributor drive, and have a look at the driver gear. If you question this being problem, place distributor back in drive and turn it by hand making note of any slippage.

I'm not saying this is definitely your problem, however one can not overlook the possibility. Your description sounds quite familiar.

Is it possible you have a bare wire or loose connection somewhere that is grounding out? Try moving some of them around and see if it helps. Just a thought mind you.
