I need to know how to clean an oil bath air filter, other than just dumping the oil and changing the oil.

Are there any special things to do to the filter elements themselves?

And is 30 wieght motoroil good enough in the oil cup?

For the most part you need to change the oil every 100 hours and if done that way you change the oil and also clean the cup and thats all there is to it. But if not change as often as it should be then you need to remove the whole assembly and soak it in gas for a few hours and then blow it out real good. You can also remove the guts of the air cleaner and soak them also. The first way can or will remove the paint

Most of the filter mesh assemblies are held in place with a retainer that is spot welded in place. If you want to dis-assemble it, you will have to drill out those spot welds, and then the retainer will need to be welded back in when done.

Thanks - another question for you...how do you remove the filter screens out of the air filter body?

The air filter assembly hasn't been cleaned since before 1972 when my grandfather sold the tractor. I recently purchased it back after he passed away.

I would not remove it. it is fastened in very well from the factory. Though it is possible to replace it, I would just clean it. Oven cleaner spray might be useful if the gasoline idea does not appeal to you. JimN

Yep a good soaking would do it a world of good then. Big problem is the cost of the gas to soak it in. Some people take out the stuff on the inside and then clean that in gas others will just soak the whole thing. My self I spray carb clean in to it and hope I get it clean enough to work for another 50 years or so. 30W will work fine in it also or figure it this way what you put in the engine also goes in the air cleaner
