As Tractor Vet says, it would be helpful to tell us what model you have. But, assuming you have a letter series, use 15W40 as a year around oil. Put 30W in the air cleaner, some may recommend a lighter oil in the winter. The air cleaner was designed to use the same oil as the engine, but this was before multiviscosity oils appeared, the 15 in the 15W40 may be too light. There is a oil level pipe plug usually on the left side of the transmission housing, (sometimes on the right side) maybe 1/2-2/3's of the way up. There are one or two drain plugs underneath the rear end. Use 90W, or 80W90, etc. Unless you have an Super MTA or a number series tractor (300-up), then you need Hytran. You REALLY need an operator's manual. There are a lot of things in it that you have no way of knowing otherwise.

use 30 wt in summer and 20 wt in winter. has the tractor been using detergent or non? it s best to stick with what it has been using. I like to throw a quart of duralube in too as it will reduce the wear of cold starts as it will lube till the oil gets there. I worked on a job where we had air tools that were to be oiled regularly and would blow oil in your face... we switched to duralube and when the oil ran out the air hammer would work like a champ for weeks and no oil in your face. So im a beliver in duralube. Now i would not take the oil out and run it empy on purpose and put water and sand on the valves like the as seen on tv ad shows.... I have had it stop lifter chatter on alot of inline sixes when you 1st start them up there would be lifter noise and go away as soon as it got oil, well the duralube stoped the chatter all toghter. the tranny oil check is on left side of gear housing and drain is underneath the pto. you should not have to change the oil in the rear unless its really old or has water in it. the rear hols 6 gallons. the engine takes six quarts. change the oil filter!
