Thanks everyone for all the tips! Tractor Vets tip of using 2 bolts worked the best.

Well now comes them pistons, only got 1 to move, it went to the bottom but would not come out, tried going out the top and it is hung up there also, grrrr. Seems there is a ridge on all the sleeves about 3/8 inch down from the top, I will try going out the bottom again this weekend.

I need a bigger sledge!!

More pics on the link below

do like michael says and hit the cylinders with a ridge reamer and cut the ridge out of the top. you can rent one pretty cheap from an auto supply store or rental place. other thing i'd try is to get the pistons to the bottom and the run a hone thru the cylinders to smooth em up a little. a ball hone would work the best, but you can use one that has the three stones too.dunk the hone in oil and run er in and out to knock the rust off.

It does have the small tank, when I get around to working on that one I want to make it a "reserve" gas tank. The guy I bought it from said the head had been redone when he bought it.

You have too many H's. You said you were going to sell one for a loss. You use the '49. You are putting way too much work into the '50 to get rid of it. That makes the '43 the obvious choice. So, you should fix it up and bring it out here to CA for me. :-)

"keep it in the family" so to speak!

Well that's the reason for the reserve tank ; )

Never ever force anything GET A BIGGER HAMMER . Now the only down side to beating pistons out that are stuck is that you could end up like the one guy that broke his block . Now i know that not all you guys that want to DIY your owen engine just for the sake of stayen out of your War Depts way But here now that ya have your new toy this is a real good excuse to buy more toys, now i am real against MADE IN CHINA STUFF big time but you are not tryen to make a living with it soooo harbro freight has them 20 ton hyd press with a ram not a bottel jack that kicks out firs time ya try and use the stupid thing and with some barn yard enginering ya can make up a support to hold a block in them i believe and press them out and this is for the cost of less then a used block or machine work . My buddy and i had a 50 toner and we made up rails to support up to a 400 seires block or big heads and we pressed the sleeves out as we had another friend that had a machine shop and if we did not have a slug it only took Chad a couple mins to whip one out . ours was a Carlolinna brand and that press earned it's keep . Heck it even strighten the back bone of a 710 I H plow that hit a huge rock and bent , that one took all 50 ton to push back into being stright .So for under 300 bucks ya could have a fine new toy setting on the shop floor that you will find a 100 uses for.

Tractor Vet, is 20 tons enough for pushing out stuck pistons? I've got an H block with 2 pistons still stuck. They have been soaking in every concoction I can think of for about three years now, and I've hammered on them as much as I dare without causing damage. The answer is a press, I've got the iron to build one, and a good idea of how I want it to look and function. The only thing I don't have is a bottle jack or whatever. 20 ton bottle jacks are easy to come by, but is this enough?

Rusty, don't try to press the piston out of the sleeve while it is still in the block, you will end up busting the sleeve, don't ask me how I know :-(

OK. Thanks. Actually I think it is a plus when the sleeve comes out with the piston.

I think your seeing some shiny bolts on the generator. At first glance they do look like plugs sticking out.

Hey Pard,

I'm pretty sure there is some sort of a law against having a shop that clean.

Or, are you working on this old beast in the house? What the heck is going on here anyway? :>)

allan, i agree, that shop is way too clean, i'm jealous. randy needs to pick up an old combine, completely disassemble it, put all the small parts in 5 gallon pails and stack em up in the shop, then drive 3 or 4 dozen 60 penny ring shank nails in the wall, hang a bunch of old fan belts, broken cables, short pieces of bailing wire, and all the loops of bailing twine he can find. park the rest of the combine outside the shop so the bees have a home, and maybe add a few junk cars and pickups next to the combine. then do some test patterns with the spray gun on the wall.various colors will really give martha stewart the shivvers. maybe even tangle up a few 100 ft extension cords, add some garden hose to the mix for texture too, then just arrange the cords willy nilly on the floor, run the air hose thru the mess too!!!..... ...uh oh.....that sounds like my barn..... .never mind randy.....keep up the good work!!!!!

You guys are a hard bunch ; )

I guess I will return my floor polisher and tell the maid to skip cleaning the shop everyday.

I thought if you had left over paint, you just kept painting the walls if they got fly specs on them.

You guys have a great weekend, hope to get a little fishing in, will let the pistons soak a bit and try again next week.

Randy

P.S. That is really not my sledge hammer ; )
