I HAVE A 59 CUB THAT RUNS VERY GOOD, BUT THE EXHAUST RUNS UNDERNEATH THE TRACTOR. I WANTED IT TO GO UP THROUGH THE HOOD WITH A STACK. I REENGINEERED THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND CUT A HOLE THRU THE HOOD FOR THE STACK AND I RAN OUT OF TIME. I COVERED THE TRACTOR WITH A TARP. A STORM CAME UP AND BLEW THE TARP OFF. NEXT MORNING I RECOVERED THE TRACTOR. SIX MONTHS LATER I PUT A STACK ON AND TRIED TO CRANK IT UP BUT IT WILL NOT CRANK. I THOUGHT WATER MIGHT HAVE GOT IN THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND POSSIBILY RUSTED THE VALVES. I PULLED THE VALVE INSPECTION PLATE AND SURE ENOUGH I'VE GOT STUCK VALVES. I PULLED THE HEAD OFF AND EVERY THING LOOKS OK, AND YOU CAN SEE SOME RUST AROUND VALVES. I THINK ALL THEY NEED IS SEATING PROPERLY. I WOULD LIKE TO DO THIS JOB MYSELF IF POSSIBLE. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP IN THIS MATTER. I'VE BUILD CAR ENGINES BEFORE BUT THIS IS MY FIRST TRACTOR.

Sears has a valve spring compressor for around $20- with adjustable height and jaws. The spring compressor is a bit tall for the C60 block (not enough height adjustment) but you can put a piece of 2x4 on the top of the block to make up the difference.

Works well for the price.

you can try soaking them in kerosene. however, i think your better off with a valve job. if you got water down in the guides and it started rusting, when you run the tractor the abrasive from the rust is going to wipe out the guides pretty quick. at the very least pull all the valves and inspect the valve stems and guides for pitting and rust. if they are all good, you can lap them and try it.

There was a special valve spring compressor made
for these engines that have the valves in the block. The old 6 cylinder Chrysler Corp cars used engines that had the valves in the block. Your local auto machine shop may know where one can be purchased. You need one of these so you can remove the keepers while the spring is compressed and when reinstalling the keepers. Try not to drop the keepers. Hal

A small engine valve spring compressor will work. If there is someone close who works on lawn and garden stuff they should have one that will work.
