At least I am pretty sure something in the clutch housing came apart. It chatters bad and makes the lever bounce in and out of the housing. Bad thing is it is sitting on a fairly steep hill near the bottom about 40 miles from home. I found a guy who can haul it home, but the road is in bad shape and I have to pull it about 1/2 mile to a place where we can load it. Some questions I have is it possible to fix it there out in the middle of the woods, and is it going to wreck something like the housing if I tow it with another tractor to the top of the hill where I can get it in a shed to work on it?

It sounds like the aluminum bracket that supports the release bearing is broken. You will be able to see for sure when you get the belly pump out.

I put a clutch in a m out in the field with a mounted corn picker on it.

Bob,

Might not even be the clutch. Does the vibration and chatter stop when ya push the clutch in?

Allan

It does still make the clicking when clutch is in, but not as bad as when it is let out. You can feel it in the steering wheel both ways.

The M has the weights and water, the F-12 is just on plain old rubber with no weights.

Bob - Doesn't sound like something that can be fixed out in the woods. Your description sounds like the throwout bearing self-destructed or maybe a clutch finger broke. If so you'll need to split the tractor to make repairs.

As for towing it with another tractor, simply put the gear lever into neutral before you start out. It'll roll along just fine with no parts inside the clutch housing turning. Just make sure it's got good, working brakes before towing it up/down any hills!!

You don't have to split the tractor on an M to do that unless it has the 12" clutch. On my '44M I changed the Pressure plate, Friction plate and throwout bearing without splitting the tractor. Everything comes out through the hole where the belly pump mounts. I've been told that the 12" clutch can not be done this way.

Yes indeed.....I was thinking my Super M (12" clutch) when I wrote that. Thanks for the correction!

Well there is some confusion as to which have the 11" and which have the 12". It's a serial number thing. Some of the later year Ms have the 12" clutch as well as the Super M.

Yes you can fix it there. As for whether or not it will destroy anything, that depends on what went wrong with. When I got my M the square adapter that connects the clutch drive shaft to the input shaft was destroyed. If you have a beely pump in it you have to take that out. As long as it has an 11" clutch the whole thing can be removed through the hole where the belly pump mounts.

It does have a belly pump and the remote valve. guess I will have to take plenty of drain pans and jugs for the oil. It started out with a very light clicking noise and got louder in less than 5 min. It would make the noise in neutral and in gear and the pedal would vibrate some when pushed in. The only tractor I have running right now is my F-12. Do you think it will pull the M with weights and water in the tires? it is a fairly steep hill and long to get to the sort of flat area.

It's hard to say whether it will or not without seeing the hill and such. It probably will. If it were me I would atleast pull the belly pump some I could see what was wrong with the clutch. If it does it in neutral as well then it could be anything. It could be as simple as jumped/broken finger on the pressure plate. I would inspect and then figure out if I could move without messing anything else up or making the whole thing worse. That's just me.

I guess I am worried about leaving it sit there where it is as I will have to leave it half tore apart possibly for a day or two at a time. it is pointed up hill, but only 50 feet to the rear is a good size pond and the deepest part of the pond. No one lives there and once in a while we get some bozo from the state forest come through on a 4 wheeler and I would hate to see them move the log blocking it, release the brake and roll her down to Davy Jones locker. Dad owns the place but lives in Indy, and I live 40 miles west of his woods. I did have a nice drive on the ol M taking it over there last Monday. took about 3hrs 45 min to get there and lot of pretty country in between.
