CNKS Do you or any others know how to get the rear axle out to replace a rubber o-ring seal on my 460 U. Do I have to remove the axle housing or is there a cover to remove to access something to get the axle to slide out? Any other tips on removing or replacing?

Butch

If refering to the oring at outer axle bearing and wheel hub the axle housing shouldn't have to come off. If you can get the hub to slide from splines you should be able to replace from outside, you may have to remove the cap on end of axle housing that has the lip type seal in it to get to oring. Some late 560 tractors used a oring between axle housing and transmission housing but if 460 ever did I'm not aware of it.

Georgeky is correct about removing the top cover, you can see everything, and for me, it goes much faster. HOWEVER, there are a couple of potential problems with the utility version. If you have fast hitch, and your tractor is original, there are steel lines running under the seat to the cylinder, the front of which fit underneath the control valve under the dash. You may be able to remove the underneath bolts with some difficulty, and disconnect the rear end of the lines from the battery box. The underneath fitting seals with o-rings, be sure to replace them. If you can't do the front part, you either need to raise the whole control unit or remove it. The other potential problem, which can be much worse is that unlike the row crop 460, the top cover is thick, meaning there is probably rust the full length of those bolts. I broke about three of mine, and managed to partially drill a couple of them out, but destroyed the hole for the other one. It should be tapped to the next larger size and replaced, I doubt if I do that since it does not leak. My bolts broke within the top cover before they got to the threads. The top cover would not come off, due to the broken bolts that I was afraid to completely drill out. The drill must be centered, hard to do when they are below the surface. I used penetrating oil and left the rear of the tractor hanging by the unbolted top cover for about a week, and was finally able to get it off, then I removed the broken bolts. Yours may come off easily, may not, you might want to consider the PTO hole -- I have never done one that way.

In order to remove the axles you have to remove the PTO from the rear end, if there is no PTO than you remove the plate covering where it would mount. Than once the PTO is removed you can remove either the bolt or snap ring that holds the bull gear to the axle. Than you should be able to pull the axle out.

I'm not sure about the 460 but the M and 560 I have replaced the axel seals on. There should be a cap on the end of the axel housing. Remove that and remove/replace the seal that is contained in the housing. The hardest part is removing the wheels.

Mine has the splined outside of the axle. the wheel hub slides onto those splines and is then held in place by a bolt and retaining washer. I need to know how to get the axle out. I am familiar with the one you are describing...the wheel hub is clamp mounted onto the axle.

If you pull the hub off, the seal retainer should come off with four bolts removed and it is a simple matter to replace the seal, most bearing houses should have the seal. The o ring should be visible from there. It just slides over the end of the axle up against the bearing.

Good luck

there isn't a cap on the end of the axel housing? I'm not familiar with 460s. If you have to remove the axel you can do it through the PTO. I found it easiest to do this way by removing the retaining bolts on the bull gears. Then using a bottle jack, push the axel out.

To get the axle out you will need to pull the top cover and remove the bull gear from the axle. Then the axle and housing will come off the tractor. There should be a seal on that end of the axle too. I have heard of some taking the PTO unit off and reaching bull gears from the rear opening, I have never tried it. Looks to me like it would be easier to take that top cover off.

Ya its doable without pulling the top cover, and just pulling the PTO. We did it last year up at school on a couple Hs and Ms. Its less work overall but it is a bit more challengeing.

It helps alot to have 3 or 4 pieces of threaded rod that are the same size of the bolts that hold the axle housing. Than when you go to put it back on you can thread those in and slide the axle housing in on them so its not flopping around. Than once it is lined up with the bull gear you can use some nuts to pull the axle in close enough that the axle bolts can start.
