Well those darn dowel pins are what held me up. I thought that nuts were just missing on them to hold the engine ; )

Once I got the engine out a little farther I could see what the problem was, put a nut and washers on them and pulled them out.

Oh and to Tom Windsor, I was dreading pulling that fan pulley after you said you broke yours, I went to put the puller on and started to tighten it by hand and it started to pull right off LOL!

Many thanks to everyone on these forums for the helpful info and tips (well some I have to figure out on my own) Now comes the removing of the pistons for my next project. I am sure I will be asking for more help ; )

Oh, your "Note to self" is priceless! I bet I have mounted at least two or three engines in my life and done the same d*mn thing myself! I don't feel so bad!

Keep of the great work! I enjoyed the pictures!

I also wanted to comment on that black and white cat that shows up in a photo of the H once you got it home. We had a cat that looked just like him. His name was Extra...because we went to a cattle show one time and he came home in the trailer with us as an extra. We had no idea where he came from or how he got in the trailer...but he was a friendly old cat for sure!

Well this cat was not so friendly, wife & daughter tamed him down over several weeks, then he got neutered ; ) Now he is pretty laid back, he would spend hours in the shop, he would climb up my folding ladder into the attic while I was wiring. Once I started using the air ratchet, he does not seem to like that tool ; )

Is that epoxy, paint, linoleum or something else covering the concrete? Looks like it cleans up easily.

I thought that I was the big cheeze when it comes to rust. I think yours is a very very close second to the piece of junk that I tore into...in fact, I can see a nice tractor emerging...thanks for the photos and update. Wish I had kept a photo record. Once you get the cam drive gear off, the idler pulley and the face plate, you can up side down this thing, remove the main bearing caps, the rod bearing caps, and with a little encouragement, this thing will move around so you can get to the nuts on the rods that you cannot now reach. Just be gentle with the encouragement. (make sure you pull that little short piece of pipe out that extends below the edge of the pan flange--you need to avoid breaking it off..) This is the oil return to the pan.

In one of the pictures you were wondering what the extra holes in the flywheel were for. I have always assumed they were drilled to balance the flywheel....Could be wrong.

I thought Steven in AZ had a neat garage. You best have broad shoulders for all the guff you are gonna take having a "spiffy" shop like that! So...what did the combine sell for? All I can say is INCREDIBLE. Any one who can do this has me standing with my jaw open. Great photos, sharp/level/clear and a great resource for this board. If you don"t mind, what did you pay for the partial tractor? What model spreader do you let your wife use? Now, all seriousness aside, is the stand you have shown supporting the H adjustable for different model tractors? Could you show me/us yter"s who are drooling (over much of the things you have shown) another photo of that stand? Please and thank you, tuk for sharing this w/us all. Gonna go wash my chin now.

Thanks for the kind words!! I have lived in my house for over 20 years and always wanted a nice shop. Started working for the neighbor part time and got hooked on helping him work on his H's & M's, thought that would be the perfect hobby for the winter time blues. So I bit the bullet and built my 40 x 50 garage/shop. I will add a link to the web page showing pics.

The manure spreader is a New Holland 510 that my neighbor had in his tree row, it had a 6 inch tree growing up through it. I asked him if I could fix it up and use it, so I put in a new floor and freed up all the rusted pieces and got it working.

The 1950 H I picked up for $350.

The stand was built from ideas and pics from this forum. I could have made it adjustable but just made it to fit the H, the legs will slide back and forth on the base, but I did not drill multiple holes on the mounting plate to fit anything else.

You are so right, and sometimes those challenges can be quite frustrating as well. For instance, I have rebuilt a bunch of Farmall H carburetors, I thought I pretty much knew every problem that a derelict carb could throw at me, until that one that I started on yesterday. It did not appear to be all that rusted up, I have encountered much worse, but this one was rusted up in places I have never had trouble with. I eventually won that battle, but by the time it is all back together, I will have spent 4 times the amount of time it should have taken.

I didn't read Tom's post about the fan pulley, but I'm guessing he was refuring to the top pulley behind the fan. They do break easily, and there is no way to use a puller on them. They adjust by screwing the flange in or out.

And, I broke the main pulley just before I broke a tooth off the cam drive gear! Be careful on both.
