I am going to look at a 300 Utility. The current owner said the steering feels sloppy. Any ideas what would cause this problem and is this common with the 300 Utility? Also, the tractor has poor rear tires. The owner said when he pulls the TA nothing happens. What would be the problem? What would the tractor be worth?

you may try opening up the steering housing and check to see if the gears are worn. if you pull the TA and nothing happens it is because the TA needs rebuilt.

I know where there is a good worm gear if you need one.

CNKS is right. The pin that runs in the worm gear is worn...and no I do not know where to find one. I usally take it apart and turn it 180 degrees so it runs on the other side. Also get a manual and insure its adjusted right. It has 2 screws for adjustment.
The TA is more than likely history. I saw an add on here awhile back where someone rebuilds them. Make sure they will install larger balls and springs if you do it.
These were good old tractors. I have 2 dad had when I was a kid...not pretty...but working tractors. I also have 2 350s and 2 extra 300s.
The big problem with the steering was that unit has to be kept full of oil to keep the moving parts lubricated. Most people never thought to check them or just did not they had to have oil.
Best of luck, but you do infact have a tractor with potential.

The 300U is an excellent tractor when in good condition. It does need power steering. The sloppy steering could be anything from loose tie rod ends to more serious problems such as worn gears inside the steering housing -- the gears will be hard to find. The TA is out on the low side, may only need adjustment, but probably needs to be overhauled--something like $5-$700? for parts, probably double that if you have someone do it. It can be used without the TA. $1500 max, but it probably needs $1500-$2000 worth of parts, so $1000 might be fair.
