OK guys, before I tear into my 51 M tomorrow, give me some ideas what to look for. Had the M for 2 years and worked on the Governor more than a year ago. It just needed cleaning up and has worked [erfect since. Several days ago I was using it and it didn't throttle down all the way. Today, while I was loading my A on the trailer (hooked to the M) i had the same problem. Later on I took it up the hill and down and same problem. Motor races downhill, not being held back as it used to. Stuck float or Gov????? or something else. (because of my health I only have about 4 hours a day to get anything done so don't want to waste time Thanks a lot

Check the screws holding the throttle butterfly to the shaft. They may be loose & the throttle doesn't close all the way. Do this before one gets on top of a piston.

Nope Henry if the float is stuck open it will just flood the carb and gas will run out. The hand throttle shaft runs to the governor, the governor then in turns opens and closes the butterfly valve in the carb.. Make sure your idle control screw has not gotten turned in somehow. other wise the governor is sticking and not allowing the butterfly valve to close completely. Good luck Tallperson

Float has absoutely nothing to do with engine speed.

Works just like the float bulb in your toilet tank. Just keeps that fluid at a constant level.

So if the float is stuck open the motor wont be getting more fuel to use when not under stress?

No,

If the float is stuck "open", the tractor absolutely will not start and run. Will just flood and run fuel out on the ground.

Your over-speed problem is caused by something somewhere between the hand throttle, the governor, the carb throttle plate/shaft or the linkages between these parts.
